    By Joe Aura.

Death leaves a pain that no one can repair, but love leaves a memory that no one can take.

On July 13, 2023, Daystar University bid farewell to Jeremy Don on the main campus. The day’s events included a film screening, talks, and remarks that happened at the ICT theatre, followed by a candle lighting as we ushered the soul away.

Both staff and students in attendance were able to experience the late Jeremy and his colleagues’ creativity as they screened his new film titled Bi-polar. The black-and-white short video explores the difficulties of relationships when living with bipolar disorder. It was an upsetting situation, and most people felt like they could have done more for our brother.

Following speeches by Madam Nita Kihiro who spoke on behalf of the school administration, the school president, Geoffrey Tum, Secretary General, Newton Kamuyu and two other members of the Congress, the congregation proceeded to the candle lighting at P.A.C, where they sang hymns and lit their candles.

“Starting today, we must look out for one another. Not as on-campus or off-campus students, Nairobi or Athi river students, but as one Daystar community”. Tum stated. He went on to urge students not to wait for such events to demonstrate their strengths. He closed his remarks by requesting everyone in attendance to “allow Daystar to become a community once more.”

Jeremy’s funeral will be held on Tuesday in Makuyu, Murang’a County. An email sent by Daystar Chaplaincy asked students wishing to travel for the funeral to register with the office of the Dean of Students as soon as possible to allow for proper transport planning. The email further stated a short memorial service will be held at the DAC auditorium in Nairobi Campus on Monday, 17th July at 2:00 p.m. This would be a great time to encourage and pray with Jeremy’s family as they plan to lay their son to rest.

    Rest in peace Jeremy Don.

Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) founded by the tech company Open AI was released in November 2022 and has taken the student world by storm.

The AI tool with several tricks up its sleeve, including answering questions, drafting emails, writing essays, and many more, has also taken the student world by storm in that it has proven effective in helping students worldwide in writing essays and assignments.

Before November, students depended on freelancers who did their assignments at a fee and went to levels where at times the freelancers would get access to student portals to submit assignments on behalf of the students. The students who could not afford to pay freelancers on a regular now stand to benefit hugely from the free AI tool and leading to a decline in pay for freelance writers.

Collins, a 27-year-old who talks to Rest of World, says that there was a time when he would get approximately 50- 70 assignments and would earn approximately 90-120,000 Kenya shillings a month. Since the launch of ChatGPT, Collins’s earnings have dropped to 50-80,000 Kenya shillings a month. Many people depended on this-online writing as it is formally called-as their source of livelihood, and this is just the beginning of the downfall.

Several students on the school campus, Daystar University, have admitted to using ChatGPT to complete their assignments. On asking why they use the platform, one student who asked to remain anonymous said, “Sometimes ChatGPT helps one complete an assignment that one forgot to do in time and submit in time and not have to worry about plagiarism.”

Some students had differing opinions on the matter, for example, Wycliff Carson, a business economics student at Daystar University said, “ChatGPT is good when one uses it to support his or her own genuine work but dangerous to the student, the society, and the world in the long run if the student entirely depends on it to do each and every assignment, and even more dangerous when this becomes a trend with students influencing each other into depending on ChatGPT.” He continued, “New ways should be found to curb the irregularity around the use of ChatGPT.”

In another interview with a lecturer at Daystar University in the School of Communication, Mr. Henry Neondo, said, “It is not legal, it is a mark of intellectual dishonesty. The challenge is that currently, there are no plagiarism checkers against work by ChatGPT.”

While ChatGPT is an effective tool that benefits most students, it could help promote vices such as laziness, and illiteracy with most students graduating without the knowledge or idea of how to write an essay or the theoretical part of the course they study.

Open AI, the tech company responsible for the creation of ChatGPT should find ways around the misuse of the platform especially among students. Unless this is done, we have a long way to save ourselves from the rabbit hole that we are digging ourselves into.

  • DOES THE SOCIETY NEED MORE MATERIALISM?

DOES THE SOCIETY NEED MORE MATERIALISM?

    By Nicole Waweru

In a materialistic society, people tend to put all their priorities on money and other materialistic things when instead they should be giving top priority to things like values, ethics, and relationships, whether familial, romantic, or even friendships. It is sad that money has been placed on such a pedestal when in reality relationships should be the ones that matter because money can be consumed very quickly, and before you know it you have nothing, whereas relationships are forever.

The only reason these cultures are thriving today is money. Such communities can never last for an extended period. Once their belongings are taken from them, they will be lost in space. Only cultures that place an equal emphasis on wealth and relationships will be able to last a long time and remain healthy and happy. There should be more of these communities because they will aid in our progress and bring us peace of mind.

People today believe that materialism is the best path ahead. However, this is wrong. There is no reason for our society to become even more materialistic. This obsession with spending will only bring disaster if it continues. Children as young as 2-3 years old are now given smartphones since they are developing smartphone addictions at such a young age.

I was shocked when I heard that my younger nieces and nephews are staying indoors all day because they have the luxury of watching tv and playing with their PlayStations all day long. While reading about the topic of materialism, it is now that I have realised that the new generation is not in touch with play and their interpersonal skills could suffer from it. If you ask me, a child who is as young as ten years old, should not even own a smartphone. Why should they? They should be out there learning how to ride a bike and fall, play with mud, etc.

Children can no longer read and write on paper with a pen, do they even know how to put ink in an ink pen? I wonder. Now that they have laptops and smartphones, all of this job can be done for them. It is awful to observe that parents are unable to properly raise their young ones, this is the sad effect of materialism on their life. And it is even scarier to think that this might be even worse, five years from now, seeing that technology is continually advancing and the introduction of ‘Artificial Intelligence.’

Also, in today’s society, people have acquired enough money that they are unable to spend it wisely and end up spending it to purchase unnecessary items. Many young people have side hustles, which is a good thing, but how do they spend the money they acquire after sales? We see the young people, including myself sometimes going on a splurge and buying all the coolest fits in the market to stay current.

his is also seen in the newest electronics that hit the market almost monthly. Every day, the most recent smartphones are introduced by all smartphone manufacturers. We frequently encounter these commercials on television when watching news networks or sporting events. It is sad to see that materialism is greatly after the youth, which even goes down to their parents. If they do not receive what they want, they grow angry and may even do something extreme, like commit suicide.

Materialism in society has led to depression and a serious deterioration in the mental health of a lot of people, because people are always putting up a show of false happiness, demanding other people’s approval of whatever they own and a quick judgment of others. This is now accepted in society as the norm. The world has become a fraud because people have grown far too materialistic with themselves. Happiness is one of the things in this world that cannot be purchased with money, we must learn from the past and begin making physical connections with others.

In conclusion, society should cease focusing on gaining wealth and instead concentrate on improving their interpersonal relationships with others. People need to understand that in this world, money is not important, families and friends are. So, we need to start living simply and spend less on pricey, unnecessary stuff. Hope this piece will help you look within yourself and ask yourself what matters to you, money or relationships? You decide.

  • DO OUR FAILURES SHAPE OUR LIVES?

DO OUR FAILURES SHAPE OUR LIVES?

(Photo courtesy of Institute of Entrepreneurship)

    By Nicole Waweru

You might be wondering, ‘Does this topic make sense?’ But in so many ways, it does. Failure can indeed bring success and shape our lives into something greater. I have had my fair share of failures in life, and as much, as I would like to give up every single time they come by, I am glad that I did not.

Failing can damage our self-esteem and in extreme cases, our will to live, but it all boils down to how you choose to come out of it, stronger or weaker. Failure is guaranteed and is inevitable, as long as you are striving for something, or if you have put yourself out there in one way or another.

Failure is often compared to defeat, I had a period in life where I said, ‘That’s all there is to it. Close the doors! I am not going to do this again. This is not meant for me.’ Failure does not spell doom, you just need to take a different path. We always put ourselves in a bad state of mind about failing when we should be asking ourselves, is this the end, or should we just try again? Consider your past mistakes, would you change any of them? What did you take away and discover from your mistakes?

More often than we would like to acknowledge, we have all failed at something in life, whether big or small. Most people only talk about failure when it is something really big that can drastically alter our relationships, financial situation, and mental health. However, failure can be seen in the little things, for example, if you had set out a to-do list for yourself, and you only managed to tick one box, you might end up feeling like you failed.

If you are anything like me, you have probably failed numerous times as well. Although we cannot claim that we especially enjoy failing, the challenges and lessons it presents shape us into better people.

We grow, mature, and improve as a result of our failures. We develop fresh viewpoints on the environment we live in. People are challenged to make big leaps when they fail because it knocks them out of their comfort zone. For the times I have experienced failure, I have found myself bouncing back stronger and attacking the situation with a better mentality because I have taken time to assess the situation and have a critical idea of how I want to take on the challenge differently. This is frequently the value of failing! Failure is a necessary step on the road to success.

All of our lives have been altered by failure. Failure has been the constant teacher of everything from puberty through adulthood. If we are constantly afraid of failing, we will constantly be on guard and lead unexceptional, unfulfilling lives. I know I have been a victim of this kind of thinking, I always thought that failing meant that you have reached the bottom of the barrel and that there is no hope for you. But, I was wrong, failure does give you a chance to recover and work on a better plan.

I always thought that all the great people I look up to, like Michelle Obama had not experienced any form of failure in their life, because as I said, I always imagined that once you fail, you stay down forever. I have however realised that even Michelle Obama, has had her fair share of failures, but the true strength comes from how she bounced back from it all, truly admirable if you ask me.

Sarah Dessen once said, ‘Life is full of screwups. You’re supposed to fail sometimes. It’s a required part of human existence.’

The range of your failure’s causes may be extensive, but it is learning from them that improves your outlook on life. Failure often leads to excellent learning; therefore, it is not always a bad thing. Having said that, nobody can escape failing, but nobody expects to succeed either.

Remember to not dwell so much on the idea of failing in whatever you are doing, instead, be kind in whatever comes your way. You never know when new opportunities to change your life will present themselves.

    By Joe Aura

As the top teams in the country prepare for the opening league games through friendly fixtures, Daystar City will take on Golf Course in a friendly this Friday.

City will be looking to bounce back after a narrow one-nil defeat against Syokimau FC in their last match out on Sunday, at Sabaki Grounds.

Club captain Bradley Kakazi has expressed optimism ahead of the friendly as the team looks to gain momentum ahead of preparation for other competitions.

Speaking to the involvement, the captain addressed the need to maintain fitness and build chemistry.

We are using such friendly fixtures to asses how we are doing as a team and sometimes individually and to figure out how we will reach where we want to be and it’s also to maintain fitness and build that chemistry we need to win games week in week out and the up coming league.

Premier League side Arsenal was held to a one-all by German side FC Nürnberg in a pre-season friendly. The Gunners broke the deadlock early on in the 7th minute when England international Benjamin White found fellow teammate Bukayo Saka with a lobbed through ball.

The 21-year-old cut in from the right to unleash a powerful shot past the goalkeeper, Christian Mathenia. The German side equalized in the second half when a misplaced pass by goalkeeper Karl Hein found Kanji Okunuki who threaded it home.

The Londoners came close to equalizing in the 90th minute when Folarin Balogun was through on goal but hit the side net.

They were without last season’s top scorer, Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian international is still out with an ankle injury sustained in May against Brighton.
