The history of videogames began in the 1950s as computer scientists began designing simple games and simulators as minicomputers . Videogames are also known as computer games , they are electronic games in which players control images on a screen.

Playing videogames is used as a form of entertainment and is an effective way to keep a person occupied. In todays world, videogames have become so common . There are videogames that can keep you healthy with enough exercise , an example is active video games while there are some that just make you lazy and want to sit all day long ; that is how addicting computers are nowadays with improved technology that makes everything interesting.

The positive effects of videogames are numerous from better memory to improved mood and social skills . When it comes to memory , video games require some serious strategy and concentration. With 3D graphics and the immersive audio, videogames are extremely rich in stimuli since navigating the virtual world of video games is similar to the real world .When you must juggle multiple tasks and goals while navigating a virtual space, you are exercising your hippocampus , which is the part of the brain , that is responsible for converting short-term memory to long-term memory which also aids in directions in case you get lost .

Videogames can also be a great way to relax and unwind. Short and simple games like Angry birds are known to make you happier while videogames that are complex and deeply immersive can also be therapeutic . When a person is fully absorbed into the games , one has no time to think about the hassles and tassels of life since video games is a perfect way to give your brain break from the anxiety and stress of everyday life.

Most genre of video games involve problem-solving , whether it is figuring out a puzzle or finding a swift escape route . These problems involve memorization and analysis and some a little creativity is needed to figure it all out. Some games have some instructions that are needed to move on to the next level and this always has a couple of errors , this patience teaches us to be more persistence and resilient in life.

Fast video games like NFS , Need for Speed or Call of Duty requires you to make decisions quickly . Such games improve our ability to make decisions in life Gamers who love action games could make more quickly decisions than non-gamers or those who play slow -paced games . Faster decision making is beneficial in everyday life as you can accomplish more when you make trivial decisions quickly.

With the emergence of many fitness videogames , it is easy to get a workout while playing an exciting video game. Games like Wii Fit or Dance Dance Revolution requires the player to get up and get active . These video games are good for your health and can be a great way to break a sweat without necessarily going to the gym.

Moderate video game play can improve social skills and reduce anxiety . When players are able to take on fictional personas in the virtual world , they are free to experiment with social interactions , which then teaches them what good social behaviuor is.

When you are playing videogames , your brain is growing and working , as you try to figure out how a puzzle or a mission goes, you are learning. Continued learning and stimulating your brain is essential to keeping it healthy as you age. As your brain ages , your memory , focus and ability to multitask all begin to decline . While young people are able to juggle several mental demands at once , older people may find it difficult to stay focused even on a single task However, they are many ways to keep your brain young such as ; doing puzzles ,eating healthy, exercising and even playing videogames .

From better memory to better navigation , playing the video games you already love is great for your brain . Now , the next time someone tells you to stop playing videogames so much , you have an arsenal of evidence to support you love for gaming.

    By Caren Chelangat

Perception is when we become aware of objects and events in the world through our various senses.

There is some way as humans we tend to judge people on our first sight at them the first meet up makes the first impression , we judge according to how we see people , how people carry themselves around and other times how people dress .

Communication is the process of passing information from one person to another we get to receive and give information through various channels .Our mood also strongly affects how we view people and events .

I learnt too that we should get to approach people fast before we actually assume what they are basing on our own thinking towards because as humans we tend to like look things through a times we are actually wrong with our thinking towards people and at other times we are actually good guessers.

Culture is the peoples way of life ,we should embrace our culture it is a mark of our identity as Africans as we emulated a lot of the western culture and we got to take it on as our own without necessarily remembering our roots .

The way we assume people whether they are smart , lazy or annoying is actually the way we will treat them and we should weigh things before we take action since we might actually be getting the wrong impression from them which is actually not it.

The kind of work we do actually gives us our own take of the world and we have various occupations in the planet so just like we all have different jobs in the world our view of the world is equally different amongst ourselves.

The old people view the world as a different angle because their own time the universe was still shabby and not yet modernized but now they are seeing it in a whole new different angle because during their time , the universe was actually a different thing.

The experience we go through makes us have a certain view on some things or some specific kind of people incase we encounter rude remarks from traffic policemen we will definitely presume all traffic police are rude .

The way we relate with people also determines how we will look at them the case of having a partner and assuming that he is just ignorant even he meant something in some other form of way we will automatically take the remark as ignorant because we just assume he or she is ignorant. Information must be arranged in some certain typa way that makes it have a meaning to the world as a whole.

Our mood depends on how we interact with others ;when a person is hungry and has been in the office the entire day definitely will have a bad mood due to the hunger and will interact with people in a moody way. We should interact with people after then we perceive their thoughts and all after an encounter with them.

  • What is mental health?

    What is mental health?

    By Nicole Waweru.

    wanjirunicole28@gmail.com

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being.  It mostly affects how we think, feel and act. It is important that we all take care of our mental health. Mental health problems tend to affect our moods, thinking and behavior throughout the day. There are many types of mental health problems that are present today and they continuously affect different people of different ages.

There are many groups of mental illnesses and they include mood disorders, eating disorders, trauma related disorders, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), psychosis, schizophrenia and substance abuse disorders. Mental illnesses make it difficult for people to cope with work and relationships.

The most effective way in which people cope with their mental health is by taking medications: this is for more extreme cases, counselling or both. Some of the most common mental health illnesses and issues include: anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosis…just but to name a few.

According to Better Health Channel, anxiety disorders is a group of mental health disorders that includes generalized anxiety disorders, social phobias, panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Approximately, 25% of the population have an anxiety disorder that warrants treatment at some time in their life and up to 25% have less severe anxieties such as fear of spiders etc.

Bipolar disorder is a type of mood disorder where a person experiences episodes of mania and depression and it is said that environmental stressors can trigger bipolar. It involves cycles of extreme low ‘depressive-episodes’ and high mood, ‘manic episodes.’ The contributing factors for bipolar disorder may include brain chemicals, environmental factors, physical illness and stress. Research suggests that around 80% of the causes are genetic.

Mental health is something that you need to keep up just like physical health. You keep up physical health by eating healthily, exercising and maintaining a healthy sleep schedule. You can improve your mental health by taking a walk outside, spending time with friends or doing something that you love. Everybody needs a break sometimes and that is okay. Mental illness and developmental disorders are not that simple.

There is no doubt that people struggled in 2020 when the pandemic first hit. People lost their jobs; schools were closed indefinitely and there was fear among the people. This fear has led to people experiencing further stress and trauma as the world grapples with the profound crisis that is Covid-19.

Safaricom PLC has joined hands with Airtel Money Kenya and Telkom Kenya to provide M-Pesa services to the two companies. The Communications Authority of Kenya and Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) launched the interoperability system which means the ability of computers or different software to exchange and make use of data of the companies on Friday, July 15, 2022.

This has marked the end of the second phase of complete Merchant Interoperability whose objective is to make it possible for users of the three mobile payment systems T-kash, M-PESA, and Airtel Money to send direct mobile payments to any merchant till number across all networks, increasing the convenience and acceptance of cashless transactions.

This means that both Airtel and Telkom subscribers can pay their bills online through Safaricom’s Pay-bill number which conducts both bulk payments and single transactions. This comes as a welcome addition to the Lipa na M-Pesa service which was launched on 8th April, 2022 by the three companies where customers can freely transact with Lipa na M-Pesa from any of the three networks.

This joined partnership between the three companies will hugely benefit its users in making several day-to-day payments for example, parents can now pay fees from any network not necessarily Safaricom.

Mobile phone users will be able to deposit and withdraw money from any agent starting in 2024, regardless of the network they are using. This will be similar to what happens with card payments, where businesses use a single device that works with different banking institutions.

According to Central Bank’s statistics, 1.82 trillion is the total money transacted by M-Pesa in the first quarter of the year; a notable increase from last year’s 1.6 trillion Kenya shillings. In the month of March, a total of 687.3 billion was transacted which according to CBK, is the largest number to ever be transacted in just one month. The sum is expected to increase because of transactions of subscribers from other networks.

M-Pesa services, i.e., Lipa na M-Pesa and Pay-bill have largely influenced the country and about 96% of Kenyans are using it. This has overtaken card payments mainly run by banks and other global companies like Visa and MasterCard.

  • WHY MEDITATION IS NECESSARY.

    WHY MEDITATION IS NECESSARY.

    By Abdul Shaban

From the time of our birth till death the heart works continuously.

Everyday the heart pumps 7000 litres of blood, of which 70% blood is pumped to the brain and the remaining 30% to the rest of body.

The blood is pumped through veins/arteries which are about more than 70,000 km long.
The strength required to pump the blood up to 42 ft high and weight of 1 tonne is generated by the heart everyday through its work.

We take rest when we are tired but if the heart takes rests for 4-5 mins we will have to rest forever.

How does the heart work so much efficiently and effectively?

Heart works effectively because it follows a discipline. In normal conditions the heart takes 0.3 secs to contract (systole) and 0.5 secs to relax (diastole). So 0.3+0.5=0.8 secs are required by the heart to complete one beat (1 cardiac cycle). That means in 1 min, the heart beats 72 times which is considered as normal heart beat.

During the relaxing phase of 0.5 secs the impure blood travels through the lungs and becomes 100 % pure.

In some stressful conditions the body demands more blood in less time and in this situation the heart reduces the relaxing period of 0.5 secs to 0.4 secs. Thus in this case the heart beats 82 times in 1min and only 80% of blood gets purified.

On more and more demand the relaxing time is further reduced to 0.3 secs then only 60% of blood is purified.
Thus 20-40% of impure blood is pumped in the veins/ arteries. These impure components (cholesterol/lipid) gets deposited on the walls of arteries/ veins and thus the elastic nature of the veins and the arteries is lost. So they become plastic in nature.

After some time due to the above conditions the veins/arteries become rigid. Now if a blood clot travels through the veins/ arteries (which in normal conditions gets easily passed away due to the elastic nature earlier) gets blocked and resists blood flow in that area. This results in a blockage which further results in Heart Attack.

From the above discussion, we can easily realise that the main reason for the heart problems is the increase demand of blood by the brain and the body.

When the activity of brain is stimulated it demands more amount of blood than that of normal conditions.

To stimulate the activity of brain 25-30% of diet we take is responsible whereas the remaining 70-75% is due to the thinking, emotions, attitude, memories and other processes of the brain.

So, those who want to keep their heart working effectively for a long period of time they should protect themselves from – worries, anger, sadness, emotions, sensitive behavior, stress and hurry.

To protect ourselves from the above, few things there is no MEDICATION available!

    So, the only option is

    MEDITATION

So it is always said :

SPIRITUAL HEALING IS THE ONLY TRUE HEALING

  • THE NEW WAVE IN TOWN

    THE NEW WAVE IN TOWN

    By Sophie Murithi
    (sophiekinya3@gmail.com)

South Korea has become quite an exciting sensation in the recent years for many people around the world. South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea is located in the East Asia. It is the most economically developed country in the continent with its beautiful Islands, rolling hills and mountains.

The Korean culture is very interesting. All aspects including the food culture, mode of dressing, their music, K-Drama and even K-Beauty. Hence attracting many people to learn and want to know more about this culture. The Korean food culture is famous for its nutritional value. Did you know Korea is the country with the least obese people in the world? These people are very keen on what they eat and hence serve some of the healthiest food in the world. Another interesting fact about the traditional Korean food culture is that they love using different colors when cooking. These colors mostly include red, yellow, green, white and black. They believe that by using these five colors when cooking, they are absorbing the energy of the universe through each meal. Each of the five colors is related to diverse elements that compose the universe, as well as to cardinal directions and philosophical meanings.

I bet most of the people who are obsessed with the Korean culture started with K-Pop. Mostly BTS (a popular Korean boy band based in Seoul). A study was conducted by the involvement team on how many students on campus listen to K-Pop and the results were as expected. Out of 10 students, 4 people absolutely love and listen to K-Pop, 3 people occasionally listen to their music and the rest do not know anything about the Korean music or culture. ‘I listen to K-Pop because of the message they preach which is mostly love, unity and kindness’ Ruth, a student of IR told me. ‘K-Pop is also a nice way to unwind. EXO is my go-to music whenever I feel low and want to feel re-energized’ she continued to say.

It goes without saying that if you listen to K-Pop you’ll want to watch K-Drama which are shows created by Koreans. If you watch one show, I guarantee you that you will want to watch another and another because the shows are that good. They bring out a set of emotions when watching that even you will be shocked. There are different genres to choose from so you can watch whatever genre you love.

In Kenya, the Korean culture has exponentially grown. There are Korean restaurants everywhere and many people are adopting their methods of traditional cooking. Not forgetting the aspect of beauty. Most of the facemasks and other facial products are being used in the Kenyan market. They can be bought anywhere, online shops like Jumia or physical shops like the Glow secret.

Korean language is also being taught in schools. UON prides itself in becoming the first university in East Africa to offer the Korean language as a course hence raising awareness of the language in Kenya. Korean studies are also being taught in Mahanaim Educational Institute, Nairobi.

Here in Kenya, we have meet and greets for people with similar interests in the Korean culture. The K-Pop and K-Drama enthusiasts meet to socialize, dance, play games, eat and generally have a good time.

Times have been tough, and things have gone wrong,
But the deep love we share has been there all along,
You say why go on, there’s nothing that’s right,
But we never give up, we continue to fight.

There’s a light of love that gives us our sight,
Our hearts may get dark at times, but we know there is light,
We both have situations not fair,
But inside we get through them because of something special we share.

The trials make you aware of the way we feel,
A love that is not fake but so very real,
I know at times that it seems like a raw deal,
But we must get through these trails until we are healed.

Trials are not easy, and you feel there’s no hope,
There are times when you feel you’re at the end of your rope,
But you must go down deep in the pit of your heart,
Let it stop your despair and give a new start.

For true love for each other is a gift some never get,
So when that trial comes, don’t ever forget,
That there is a rare thing we share that had to come from above,
And those trials will end, what got you through was pure love.

  • AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE MONEY

    By Stephanie Kampire

    stephanierwicha200394@daystar.ac.ke

Fenty Beauty was launched in Kenya on Thursday 26th May 2022 at the Social House Lavington, Nairobi.

This famous brand is partly owned by a renowned musician, Rihanna Robyn. She has focused on a range of traditionally hard to match skin tones, developing formulas that work for all skin types, and pinpointing universal shades. Her aim, above all, is to inspire: “Makeup is there for you to have fun with. It should never feel like pressure. It should never feel like a uniform. Feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.”

This dazzling and beautiful launch was graced with appearances from Kenya’s creative industry, which generated quite a buzz on social media as fellow Kenyans talked about how they were dressed.

Today, Fenty Beauty is one of the most popular and successful brands in the world. Forbes has estimated that the bulk of the musician’s fortune which is around $1.4 billion, specifically comes from the value of Fenty Beauty which she has 50% ownership of. The company itself is worth $2.8 billion making her the wealthiest female musician in the world.

Rihanna has clearly shown the world that limitations to the music industry are present and that it is possible to make money through makeup. She has become a vivid inspiration to upcoming brands in the world and especially here in Africa. It is safe to say that many makeup brands have come up and have made as much money as Fenty Beauty, but in my opinion, none of them have addressed a need such as this; having traditional makeup for hard to match skin tones. This make up line has made its consumers feel bold and beautiful regardless of the imperfections on their skin.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics valued these products at Ksh. 100 Billion. I also acknowledge the growth of the industry in the current local market of Kenya. We have our very own Suzie Beauty, Joanna K cosmetics, and also Huddah Cosmetics. What is evident in all these brands is that the influence they have on the public as youtubers and content creators has helped them establish businesses that are clearly generating quite an amount of profit. This is the same for the Chief Executive Officer of Fenty Beauty, Rihanna. She has used her musical career and her effect on people to establish a business that has put her on the map as one of among the wealthiest artists in the world.

Opportunities to make money are found in the influence that we have on the people in our spheres. The Bible says that your gift will make room for you, I beg to add that your influence executed in a wise way can create wealth for you and opportunities for the unemployed.

In whatever field we may find ourselves in, think about how to make money from it other than wallowing in the sense that we are living in a poor economy that has absolutely no way to be successful.

    WHAT IF I MARRY HER

    By Abdul Shaban

What if nature is not fair to you

What if I marry your girlfriend,

What if I treat her better than you did,

What if I live my promises with her,

Will you still be mad at me?

What if she finds the love of her life in me,

What if I sent sweet romantic poems to her,

What if I go with her to the movies,

What if I build a home with her,

What if I get kids with her,

    Will you still forgive me?

What if she lies to you only to be with me,

What if she fails to come meet you,

Only to come and hang out with me,

What if she lies to you she doesn’t sing,

But sings to me the whole night,

Will you be stupid to believe her?

What if I am the hero in her dreams,

What if her heart melts only when she sees me,

What if she introduces me to you as her cousin,

And deep inside I’m her beloved lover,

What if she pecks me in front of you,

Will you be kind enough to give us a space?

    When that time comes,

When I finally marry your girlfriend,

Don’t be mad instead be happy,

    For she will be secure,

    Safe in my arms .

What if the hand would fall for the leg,

    Get married and bear children,

Regardless of the looks, the number of toes or fingers,

    How would life have been?

Rivers ain’t flowing from the same source anymore,

    No romance without finance,

Good looks go with a sense of humour,

If you ain’t armed you ain’t qualified!

You are the song my heart sings,

A beauty I’d love to wife,

A house to forever build on,

The lyrics are so new to forget…

    Afraid of this vacuum I’m,

Pieces to fill it are scattered,

Life is slowly getting out of hand,

A blade of grass tightly onto I hold,

Fearing stealthily it might slide out.

    It’s a prayer humbly I make,

Fight the battle for our sake,

A proposal am ready to make,

    Physicians, save my rib!
