    The 2023 Rugby World Cup: A Spectacular Event for Fans and the Planet

    The 2023 Rugby World Cup is not just a sports tournament, but a global celebration of rugby and its values. The event organized by World Rugby, the sport’s international governing body, features the best rugby teams from around the world competing for the ultimate prize: the Webb Ellis Cup.

    The tournament has been captivating audiences all over the world with its thrilling matches, dramatic moments, and inspiring stories. The fans have played a vital role in making the event an entertaining and memorable one. They have created a festive and vibrant atmosphere in the stadiums and the host cities, cheering loudly, singing songs, and waving flags. The fans have been the heart and soul of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

    But the tournament is not only a showcase of the best rugby talent in the world, but also a platform for social and environmental change. The organizers set ambitious goals to make the event the most sustainable and inclusive ever, and to involve fans in every aspect of the event.     There have been some truly exciting games played, with some of the most memorable moments coming from the quarter-finals. South Africa’s win over France and New Zealand’s triumph over Ireland were both classics and will go down in history as some of the greatest Rugby World cup games ever played. As a Kenyan, I would love to see my country play at that stage and especially Daystar Falcon players on the come up like Odongo.

    The final is going to be electric, with some of the best rugby players in the world competing for the ultimate prize. The final will take place on Saturday 28th October 2023 at 8pm UK time (9pm local time in France), (22:00) Kenya Time, at Stade de France in Saint Denis, Paris.

    The two finalists have braved through tough opponents to reach this stage. South Africa defeated Wales 19-16 in a nail-biting semi-final, while New Zealand crushed England 32-12 in a dominant display. Whether you are a die-hard rugby fan or a casual viewer, you will not want to miss this exciting event.

    The 2023 Rugby World Cup final is a must-watch for anyone who loves sports, drama, and entertainment. Who will lift the Webb Ellis Cup? Who will make history? Who will you support?

    BOOK REVIEW: MAKING CENTS: REAL CONVERSATIONS ABOUT PERSONAL FINANCE

    The author of this book, Waceke Nduati, is a name that is familiar to many if not all. She is the founder and entrepreneurship coach of Centonomy Limited of which she is also the lead trainer. The book talks to us about managing our finances, how to create a budget, the importance of investing, and how to manage debt, just to name a few things. It has a total of seven chapters and in each, the author spills a lot of dos and don’ts on what to do with money and how we can all strive for financial freedom.

    In this book, Waceke uses real-life experiences and people who share their struggles with money and from these stories, we get to see how they were able to learn from their problems and grow. One of my favorite characters in the book was Douglas. I felt connected to him because I could relate to him more than the rest. He grew up in a home where talking about money was taboo and believed that money was only managed by his parents. However, his family was bad at making financial choices and he, therefore, grew up believing that ‘his family, his people were bad at handling money.’

    After high school, he started a business that was successful at the time. However, he would always spend the profits on himself and his friends and at the end of the day, had dissipated all his money. He carried this behavior on to when he got a well-paying job and was fully independent and he would find himself in the same hole over and over again. His answer to this was to believe that he had fulfilled his prophecy of ‘being bad with money like his family.’

    The personal ordeals mentioned in the book are like a slap in the face because they cause you to reflect on how you use your money and how to make better choices moving forward. Chapter 2, ‘Gucci and Versace for your body-o’, really opened my mind since it talks about spending on lifestyle. The main message Waceke tries to put across in this chapter is not to let other people pressure you to a lifestyle that you know very well you cannot live up to.

    The engaging part of this book is also very refreshing. After each chapter, there is a reflection page with questions that relate to the chapter. This to me was a good move for this book; the questions help you analyze your relationship with money deeply.

    Back to Douglas, when he started working, he would earn a monthly salary of 150K. He rented out an apartment worth 16K a month and only furnished it with a bed, TV, radio and three cups of tea. He would then spend the rest of his salary every month in bars and would quickly blow through his salary.

    The author teaches us how to understand what drives our spending behavior and this will in turn allow us to consciously catch ourselves when we make unhealthy choices that are damaging to our financial progress. The book also has a personal workbook and templates of a budget, assets, and liabilities.

    I would recommend this book to anyone who would want to have a deeper understanding of how to manage their money on a long and short-term basis. I think it is important that we create a community where talking about money is not uncomfortable or taboo.

    Is this one of those books which you quickly read and shelf? No. It needs a lot of concentration to be able to understand all the concepts that Waceke has laid out in the book. I would highly recommend that you read it with a pen and paper so that you can scribble down any key points or calculations that you might need to do. The technicality is what makes the book worth your time… or money, you decide.

    The overall rating is 9/10.

    you laugh, cry, think and learn? If yes, then you don’t want to miss Uriithi, a play that talks
    about inheritance, career, integrity issues and the virtue of patience.

    Uriithi is a Swahili word that means inheritance. The play tells the story of Gerald, a young
    corporate manager who inherits his father’s political ambitions after he is assassinated. However,
    Gerald’s father was a governor who had many enemies and secrets.

    Gerald decides to quit his job and run for office, hoping to fulfill his father’s legacy. However,
    he soon realizes that politics is not as easy as it seems. He faces corruption, betrayal, violence
    and manipulation when he meets a mysterious woman who claims to be his supporter, but who
    has a hidden agenda of her own. ‘Mambo yamechemka!’ Gerald’s life and reputation is set to be
    destroyed.

    Will Gerald fight to succeed in his political career? Will he discover the truth about his father
    and the enemies who are now his? Will he find true love ill he fall for the woman’s trap? What
    will he learn from his experience? Find out the answers to these questions and more in Uriithi, a
    play that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

    Uriithi is a play that will make you think about your own life and choices. It will challenge you
    to reflect on your own inheritance, career, integrity and patience. It will inspire you to follow
    your own path and pursue your own dreams.

    The play will be staged at Daystar University Auditorium on 4th of November 2023. The first
    show will start at 3:00 pm and end at 4:30 pm; the second show will start at 5:20 pm and end at
    7:00 pm. Tickets range from Ksh 400 – 1000 for students, regular and VIP. Come one and all to

      than he went up. He did not have the patience to learn the ropes and build trust with the
      people. He also did not have the patience to wait for the right time and opportunity. He
      rushed into things without thinking of the consequences. The play shows us that patience
      is a virtue that can help us achieve our goals and avoid mistake
    • • Career: Gerald had a successful career as a corporate manager, but he gave it up for
      politics. He did not follow his passion or talent, but rather his father’s footsteps. He did
      not consider his own strengths and weaknesses, or his own interests and values. He did
      not consult with his family or friends before making such a big decision. The play shows
      us that career choices are important and should be made carefully and wisely.
    • • Integrity: Gerald faced many ethical dilemmas in politics. He had to choose between
      doing what is right or what is easy; between serving the people and serving himself;
      between being honest and being deceitful. He also had to deal with the consequences of
      his actions and choices. The play shows us that integrity is a quality that can earn us
      respect and trust, or lose them.
    • • Inheritance: Gerald inherited his father’s political ambitions, but he also inherited his
      father’s enemies and secrets. He had to deal with the legacy of his father, both good and
      bad. He had to face the past and the present, and decide what kind of future he wants to
      create. The play shows us that inheritance is not only about material things, but also
      about moral values and social responsibilities.

    Embattled Meru Governor, Kawira Mwangaza, was impeached on Wednesday, 25 October, for the second time in 10 months.

    The motion was filed by County Assembly majority leader, Evans Mawira and supported by 59 out of 69 MCAs who were present during the motion.

    “At this juncture, it is my pleasure to announce the ayes have it. The motion has passed and the governor stands impeached by the County Assembly of Meru,” Meru County Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi declared.

    Governor Mwangaza has previously been charged with several violations that include nepotism, embezzlement and misappropriation of county funds among others.

    Her defence team, led by lawyer Danstan Omari and Elias Mutuma, have put on a spirited fight to absolve the governor of the accusations against her. Mr Omari also claimed that the person they want to impeach does not exist. He claims that the name the MCAs used in the public participation exercise was Bishop Faith Kawira Mwangaza which is not her, governor Mwangaza.

    “Who is that person? You were present when she was being sworn in by the Judiciary. There was nobody sworn in by the Judiciary called Bishop Kawira Faith Mwangaza. We have the Judiciary certificates here,” Omari stated.

    Governor Kawira had turned to the court of Appeal in Nyeri to stop the Meru County Assembly from debating her impeachment motion. Unfortunately on Wednesday morning, the Court of Appeal denied the request and said that it would rule on the matter on Friday, 27 October, 2023.

    The first attempt to impeach her, in December 2022, barely 3 months in office, was saved by the Senate that did not uphold her impeachment. Her fate once again lies in the hands of the senate. If the senate upholds the impeachment, a by-election would be held to appoint a new governor.

    Several leaders including CS Moses Kuria and Governor Ann Waiguru have come out to sympathize with the governor. “Governor Kawira’s impeachment is very unfortunate. This is a sad day for women in leadership seeing a woman governor being a constant target by people who don’t think she is qualified enough to lead the great county of Meru.” Millicent Omanga stated on her X platform.

    “I stand with you my sister Governor Kawira Mwangaza. It’s darkest before dawn. Look to the Hills from whence your help comes from. There is God in Heaven.” Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru also stated on X account.

    On Monday, 23 October, the Kenyan shilling hit an all-time low, trading at 150 shillings for one dollar amid an inflation rise in the country.

    The drop in value of the shilling is mounting pressure on the forex reserves that stood at $6.8 billion as of October 19, which covers a total of 3.7 months’ worth of imports. This is a fall from $7 billion a year ago that covered 5.5 months’ worth of imports.

    This comes as a concern to Kenyan citizens, as the government seems to not comment on the rapid decline of the shilling’s value. It is exactly the opposite of what president Ruto promised during the campaigns last year August.

    The CBK governor, Kamau Thugge, has come out to defend the shilling during an appearance before National Assembly Finance committee led by Molo MP, Hon. Kuria Kimani. Thugge says that the shilling has been overvalued for over six years, since former president, Uhuru Kenyatta’s reign.

    “So at one point, we had reserves of 5.5 months of import cover now we have currently we have 3.7 months on the import cover is still sufficient to address any emergencies but there has been that decline in the level of reserves to try to defend perhaps overvalued exchange rate,” Thugge said on Tuesday.

    The Central Bank, in its latest financial report released on Oct. 15, blamed the decline of the shilling on the “rapid monetary policy tightening in advanced economies that pushed global interest rates sky-high, triggering the flight of investors to quality currencies like the dollars.”

    The Central Bank however has its hopes up that recovery in exports, resolution of Russian-Ukraine conflict, pausing of global monetary policy tightening, rise in diaspora remittances, prudent monetary policy and stable import bill are expected to support the shilling to regain value and stability.

    The president in April 2023, had promised that in a few months, the value of the shilling would rise against the dollar. Times show that it is not the case and the drop in value has made other regional currencies like Uganda and Tanzania gain value by as much as 10 shillings.

    Students at Daystar University have been reflecting on the need to approach the institution about extending their recess period from just a single day.

    Recess is a time during the school day when students can engage in physical activity, connect with their friends, and take a mental break from their academic work. Daystar University is a well-known university that provides a wide range of scholarly knowledge and career and personal application skills, which means that a lot of information is handed out to and absorbed by its students.

    Recess programs, according to a Stanford University research, can help adolescents feel more involved, more secured, and optimistic about school. A well-organized recess program can also help students prepare to learn once they return to the classroom. Recess enables Daystar University students to take a break from their academic work and engage in physical activities such as sports or games. This can help them enhance their physical and mental wellbeing.

    Students can also use recess to connect with their peers and form relationships that may continue beyond their university years. Glamour, a Daystar University student and Daystar Christian Fellowship member, was able to spend her recess with her members at a camp and participate in team building activities. “ I spent my recess at Mtoni camp in Gilgil. It was an incredible spiritual awakening experience. During that time, I felt relaxed and had a lot to learn. We went for early morning runs to the river, cooked together, and fellowshipped. Meeting individuals who introduce you to a different way of thinking and perceiving life was one of the things I loved.” (Glamour is a second year student pursuing Communication in Electronic Media.)

    Academic breaks are also important for students since they help them avoid fatigue and enhance productivity. Students can recharge their batteries, reduce stress, and improve their overall well-being by taking a break from studying. UCL concludes that regular pauses can improve memory, provide energy boosts, reduce stress, improve health, and increase performance and creativity.

    Here’s a funny story to conclude on why taking a break is important: A teacher assigned her students to write an essay about what they would do with a million dollars. “I would give half to charity and keep the other half for myself,” one student wrote. The teacher questioned why the student would keep half for himself. “Well, I wouldn’t want to be too tired from giving all the money away!” said the student.

    Defending Champions Gor Mahia closed the gap on league leaders Posta Rangers after a Narrow 1-0 win against Tusker FC on Sunday at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.

    Benson Omalla scored the games solitary goal to take K’Ogalo a point closer to Posta who tasted their first defeat of the season at the hands FC Talanta in a 3-1 thrashing.

    In other matches Sofapaka registered their first win of the campaign after handing Zdravko Logarušić his first taste of defeat as Police FC head coach after two successive wins.

    The win leaves AFC leopards as the solitary club yet to register a win this season after they were handed a 1-0 loss at the hands of Bandari at the Mbaraki Sports Club courtesy of a Derick Nsibambi goal.

    Other fixtures saw a barren draw between Bidco United and Muranga Seals as KCB played a one-all draw against Ulinzi Stars while Shabana drew 2-2 to City Stars.

    Football banter is what makes the beautiful game beautiful just as much as the football  played on the pitch itself.

    The banter often involves opposing teams taunting and teasing each other in the build up to the match and after.

    The Kenyan Premier League scene has long had the banter culture on hold for some time but recent weeks has seen a rise in opposing teams taunting and teasing each other.

    At the forefront of this has been the defending champions, Gor Mahia who brought gist to the Mashemeji derby played right before the just concluded international break.

    In the build up to the promising encounter with AFC Leopards, the K’Ogalo social media team made humorous comments on the back of Leopards form, having not won a single match since the start of the season.

    The admin humorously joked about mashemejis recent form in head-to-head encounters with the defending champions sharing images of a Leopard in distress with its head stuck in a pot and another image of a Leopard stuck in a well.

    The Leopard being the emblem of AFC leopard was to signify the troubled waters the Thomas Trucha-led outfit find themselves in.

    Since then, other KPL teams have joined in on the bandwagon mostly at the expense of AFC Leopards most notably Bandari FC.

    In the build up to their match with Bandari, Leopards played in a friendly match with Zoo Kericho which they lost.

    Bandari social media team was quick to hilariously  point out the result and assure the den’s faithfuls that the result was a foreshadowing of the flogging they will receive at the hands of the coast based  team.

    K’Ogalo yet again was at the forefront ahead of their showdown with Tusker FC in the KPL’s most played fixture with the team’s Instagram admin posing a question to their fans  on whether they could imagine consuming 98 bottles of the alcoholic beverage Tusker in reference to the amount of Goals that Gor has scored against the former champions.

    With K’Ogalo poised to take on Tusker FC later today at the Kasarani stadium  as Leopards take on Bandari, it remains to be seen the twists and turns the banter will take with 3 points on the line as well as bragging rights.

    The Gaza War has been ongoing for the more than a week and has been horrific for Palestinians, Israelis, and the watching world. The conflict began on October 7th, 2023, when Hamas launched an unprecedented assault on Israel, with hundreds of gunmen infiltrating communities near the Gaza Strip . The surprise attack was followed by severe air attacks by the superior military of Israel.

    The humanitarian aspect of the war is devastating. According to the UN, at least 2,104 Palestinians have died, including 1,462 civilians, of whom 495 were children and 253 women. Israel has said it killed at least 225 militants during the fighting. The supplies in Gaza Strip may not last more than a day as negotiations continue between Israel, the United States, Egypt, and others for the delivery of aid in Gaza. Gaza is being leveled as we speak.

    When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. The leaders of both sides seek pride and redemption for their people but end up creating havoc and death for them. Many nations have already taken sides – The U.S condemning what they called an act of terrorism from Hamas and the U.A.E in full support of the course to ‘Free Palestines’ . It almost seems like a holy war.

    From Baghdad and Amman to Jakarta and Islamabad, large crowds have gathered to denounce Israel’s heavy bombardment of the Gaza Strip. Protesters have waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “Crush the Zionists”.

    The United Nations has expressed deep concern for all civilians in the Gaza Strip following Israel’s order for the entire population there to leave. The U.N. said about 1 million Gaza residents have been displaced in just a week. About half of them are finding refuge in schools and other facilities where water supplies are diminishing. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian organization that aims to protect and aid victims of conflicts. It has been in Israel and the occupied territories since 1967. The organization is asking for donations to improve access to essential services like water and to support livelihood projects. Doctors Without Borders is a nongovernmental organization that provides humanitarian aid to people affected by conflict, disease outbreaks, and natural and human-made disasters. The agency is seeking donations to continue providing medical care in the area.
