FKFPL: Posta Lead the Chasing Pack Chaos Ensue at Gor v Seals Game

FKF Premier League leaders, Posta Rangers dropped points as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to AFC Leopards at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Saturday.

The mailers fought back to cover their early minute blemishes as they conceded in the third minute courtesy of a Kaycie Odiambo strike.

The leaders however maintained their position as neither defending champions Gor Mahia nor newcomers Murang’a Seal capitalized on the dropped points.

The police had to lob teargas to disperse the rowdy crowd as journalists, players and match officials took refuge on the pitch side.

Elsewhere, KCB closed the gap on the leaders with a 3-0 win against Bidco United while troubled Shabana climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 against Nzoia Sugar.

Women are Human too

An embattled governor’s Senate hearing revealed just how “backward” people are in some parts of the country. To devalue and dehumanize someone to the point of seeing them as sexual objects just shows how low the bar has fallen, if it was existent in the first place. For eons this has been the sad narrative women have had to go through in the hands of society, mostly men and apparently, the more things change the more they remain the same.

It has become a constant fight, with the men on one hand trying to put down women who genuinely want to be better versions of themselves, and on the other hand, women doing whatever it takes just to prove a point. How many times have we read stories of how ladies worked their way to the top, and when they eventually succeed, show up on interviews talking of how they overcame so many obstacles just to get there?

If you analyse keenly, a majority of these challenges are set by men. Women would not have to be termed as “warriors” or “survivors” if there wasn’t a fight in the first place. In the workplace, school, and the society in general, some men feel intimidated when women are successful. Hence they try and stifle their progress in life by any means necessary. When this fails, they try to attack them from the top. This is when one hears statements such as “she slept her way to the top job in the company” or “she was given that post just because she’s pretty.”

We need to nip this in the bud. They say one cannot start climbing a tree from the top, neither does uprooting it. We need to address the underlying issues behind such statements, thoughts and stereotypes. It is inhuman for someone in this day and age to still think that all women should do in society is be “child- bearers”.

It’s all a mentality. Men need to unlearn some of these ideas that were fed to us when we were growing up. Even today in some communities, there are certain parts of an animal that a lady should not eat, or certain places women should not be found. These are some of the ideas that are still being circulated around.

Exposure is very important in curbing this menace. Basic education is a foreign concept to some of the people purporting such ideas. Youths today call it “kienyeji mentality”. Travel the world, read books, associate with people who have more helpful knowledge than you. Ask questions if need be. It is sad, though, that even the most learned of individuals still have such misogynistic behavior. Women have to work twice as hard just to reach a man’s level. This should not be the case. They should be treated just as equally as men. The fact that a lady can go to school, learn, get a job and make her own money without having sexual relations with the CEO or compromising her values is basis enough for them to be spared of the harsh criticism they face day in day out.

Successful nations have been led by women. Key government parastatals have been led by women before. Of course there is the argument that women are trying to overthrow men as the head of the society. People who have such ideas should realize that these two are independent of each other. Why would a lady vying for a political seat make the male competitor feel threatened? She is just looking for an opportunity to lead as you are. Once we start seeing them as fellow humans and not people of the opposite gender, the backwardness witnessed recently would be a thing of the past.

UEFA Champions League highlights

Manchester United’s woes continued as they slumped to the bottom of their UEFA Champions League group following a 4-3 loss to FC Copenhagen on Wednesday night. Rasmus Hojlund continued his fine goal scoring form in Europe but his goals were not enough to seal a win for the Red Devils. Marcus Rashford was sent off in the first half for a nasty tackle on a defender. Defeat leaves United fourth with 3 points, needing to beat Bayern and Galatasaray to have any chances of advancing to the knockout stages.

Elsewhere, Bukayo Saka starred in an emphatic 2-0 win for Arsenal against Sevilla. The Gunners are in a favorable position to advance to the knockout stages and they got ahead through a Leandro Trossard goal, who was played in by Saka. The provider turned goalscorer after gliding past Sevilla defenders to score the second goal of the game. In other results, Napoli played out a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin while Real Sociedad beat Benfica 3-1. Harry Kane scored two goals for Bayern Munich to ensure his side progressed to the last 16 in a 2-1 win over Galatasaray.

Real Madrid put out another stellar perfomance in absence of Jude Bellingham as Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr. got on the scoresheet to help their side defeat Braga 3-0. Brahim Dias put Los Blancos ahead in the first half before Ancelotti’s boys put the contest beyond the visitors in the second half. Man City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, RB Leipzig and Inter Milan are some of the teams that have already sealed a last 16 slot in this season’s Champions League.

STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT RUTO

President William Ruto issued his first state of the nation address at the parliament on Wednesday, November 9, 2023.

The address has come 14 months after he was sworn to office to address the nation on what the government, under his control, has done for the past one year. This is according to the constitution that requires him to deliver an address at least once a year.

The president commented on the projects that the government is handling according to the bottom up agenda and he is confident that they are on the right path.

He noted that the hustler fund, launched on 30^th November 2022, is helping Kenyans settle loans and fund their small business enterprises.

“We committed to provide affordable and accessible credit and restore small business owners to good standing with credit rating agencies,”

Dr. William Ruto, commented on fertilizer subsidy. He said that the cost of fertilizer for farmers has decreased from 6500 shillings to 2500 shillings. He says that as a result of these interventions, a two kilogram packet of flour ranges from 145 to 175 shillings according to the brand bought and a gorogoro of maize costs between 60 and 75 shillings.

On affordable housing, the president noted that the construction of 47,000 houses is underway and another 40,000 to commence in the coming weeks.

During an interview on Citizen television, the Attorney General, Justin Muturi, was asked on the rise in cost of a marriage certificate, he said that he was also surprised and that a lot of consultation is happening. “Kenyans have been heard and they should have faith” he said.

With its state-of-the-art equipment, the water treatment facility guarantees that the water provided to the campus community is of the purest quality and satisfies all safety regulations. The plant’s architecture ensures a steady and dependable supply of water by processing and purifying water from the school’s borehole.

The initiative’s most noteworthy effects have been seen in the students’ financial situation. Now that they have access to drinkable, clean water on campus, students don’t have to set aside money for bottled water. For many, this has resulted in real savings, enabling them to reallocate money toward other requirements, like personal and educational ones. “I do not have to walk all the way to the shops outside school to get fresh water, ‘’ Julian a fourth-year student said.

The student body has expressed strong support for the water plant’s financial relief and convenience. Julian Tallam, a fourth-year law student, expressed her gratitude saying, “This water plant is a game-changer for us.” Every week, we used to spend a large sum of money on bottled water. We may now use that money for other necessities like education.”

Furthermore, the greater availability of clean water has resulted in a considerable increase in students’ hydration levels. With the scorching sun a regular aspect of the region, being appropriately hydrated is critical for the students’ well-being and performance. The water plant has reduced the need for students to carry heavy bottles across campus, assuring a steady supply of fresh water to keep them refreshed and attentive throughout the day.

As the sun continues to shine on the Daystar University campus, students may take comfort in the realization that access to safe, inexpensive water is no longer an issue. Mr Beast’s Kenya Project Exposes Government’s Shortcomings

In recent years, Jimmy Donaldson, alias MrBeast, a popular YouTuber and philanthropist, has made headlines worldwide for his extraordinary acts of charity and generosity. Known for orchestrating grand gestures like giving away cars or building elaborate houses for the homeless, MrBeast’s philanthropic efforts have inspired many.

However, his latest project in Kenya is shining a light on a different aspect of his generosity and is prompting Kenyans to question the government’s commitment to providing essential services.

MrBeast’s latest endeavor in Kenya revolves around the construction of about 52 boreholes to provide clean and accessible drinking water to underserved communities. Unlike his previous high-profile projects, this one has been notably discreet.

Boreholes were drilled in locations like Toroplongon, which is part of the Keiyo South Constituency in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, as well as Nairiri in Tigania West within Meru County.

During the exhilarating 10-minute video on his YouTube channel, a captivating moment unfolds as the boreholes are being completed. Notably, the philanthropic team also undertakes an impressive array of activities to uplift local schools. They introduce state-of-the-art computers, refresh classrooms with new furnishings, set up storage shelves stocked with new fresh books, generously donate soccer balls to students, and even install modern whiteboards and projectors.

He recently took to the X platform and shared about his initiative. He did, however, also candidly express his concerns about the possibility of facing backlash or cancellation for his actions.

“I already know I’m gonna get canceled because I uploaded a video helping people, and to be 100% clear, I don’t care. I’m always going to use my channel to help people and try to inspire my audience to do the same,” he wrote.

The Kenyan government has frequently promised to address the country’s water crisis by building boreholes and improving access to clean drinking water. However, the reality on the ground often falls short of these grand promises. Many Kenyan communities still lack access to safe drinking water, with the government’s efforts appearing insufficient at best and insincere at worst.

MrBeast’s quiet actions have terribly exposed the government’s “bare minimum” approach to addressing the water crisis in the country. While Kenyan politicians make speeches and issue press releases about their commitment to improving access to clean water, it often seems like their actions do not align with their words.

However, MrBeast’s silent philanthropy in Kenya has triggered a significant online conversation within the country. Kenyans are now taking to social media platforms to express their frustration with the government’s perceived inadequacies. They question why a foreign philanthropist can quietly and effectively address a pressing issue while their elected officials fail to do so transparently and efficiently.

“The thing is, these things are possible. Kujenga barabara, digging up boreholes, building schools etc. Development can actually happen in 1 year,” one wrote.

“Great initiative from Mr Beast. Although this is humiliating in a governance perspective. Why don’t school children and hospitals have access to boreholes. These are the most basic forms of water access. Yaani borehole tunachimbiwa na YouTubers.”

Another X user said; “52 wells, A bridge, projectors, computers, Desks that’s what MR Beast Singlehandedly did for Kenya, am sure he did more kushinda Kenye imefanywa na governors wote hii mwaka.”

Kenyans’ vocal criticism of the government’s perceived inaction shows that they are eager for change and expect their leaders to fulfill their promises.

As this story continues to gain traction online, it remains to be seen whether the Kenyan government will take notice and take more concrete actions to address the water crisis in the country. Regardless of the outcome, I believe MrBeast’s actions in Kenya have already left a lasting impression, encouraging others to scrutinize the actions of their governments and advocate for change when necessary.

CS Kithure Kindiki Proclaims Monday, November 13 to be a Public Holiday

Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary, Prof. Kithure Kidniki, has announced an extraordinary day of action. November 13, 2023, will be a public holiday to encourage widespread participation in a nationwide tree-planting campaign.

This remarkable initiative is part of President William Ruto’s ambitious plan to grow 10 billion trees by 2032. In a bid to address the pressing issue of Climate Change, and restore the nation’s ecosystems.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares Monday, 13^th November, 2023, a public holiday in which the public shall be engaged in tree growing countrywide,” as detailed in part of the notice.

Professor Kindiki, in an official gazette notice issued on November 6, stated that the President,(Dr.) William Samoei Ruto, would take the lead in this significant tree-planting initiative. It’s not just a one-location event, the tree planting initiative will span across all 47 counties, with Cabinet Secretaries and Governors presiding over the ceremonies with the expectation that every Kenyan Citizen will actively participate.

“The exercise is part of Kenya’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme–Towards the Growing of Fifteen (15) billion trees. There will be a designated National venue for the tree planting presided over by His Excellency (Dr.) William Samoei Ruto.”

The decision to declare November 13 a public holiday stems from the Cabinet’s gathering in Mombasa on November 3, 2023, where the urgent need to combat the devastating impacts of climate change was discussed and acknowledged.

While it’s a day for environmental action, this unique holiday is a chance for all Kenyans to contribute to the country’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme, aiming to grow a total of fifteen billion trees.

In a bid to make Kenya a greener place, come November 13,2023, Kenyans will come together to enhance their nation’s environmental sustainability, planting trees one at a time.

English Premier League Matchday 11 review

Tottenham Hotspurs’ unbeaten start to the league came to a shattering halt as Chelsea romped to a 4-1 win over their rivals on Monday night. Ange Postecoglou’s men came into this match looking to head back to the top of the table and had a perfect start after Kulusevki’s shot deflected off Levi Colwill to put Spurs ahead.

But red cards to Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie changed the game completely. Nicolas Jackson scored his first Chelsea hat trick in the dying minutes of the game to inflict Spurs their first loss of the season. The result sees Chelsea move up to tenth place and give them motivation ahead of their clash with current leaders Man City on Sunday.

In other results, Nottingham Forest beat Aston Villa 2-0, while stubborn Luton Town held Liverpool to a 1 all draw. Luton looked set to get their first home win of the season but Luis Diaz equalized in the final minutes of the game to rescue a point for the Reds. On Saturday Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the league also ended as they lost 1-0 to Newcastle, thanks to a controversial goal by Anthony Gordon.

Bruno Fernandes was once again Man United’s hero as his late goal helped his team beat Fulham 1-0. Fulham looked set to pound more pressure on Erik Ten Hag but United’s captain brilliantly dummied two defenders before rifling a shot into the bottom corner. Sheffield United earned their first win of the season as they upset Wolves 2-1. More pressure mounted on Vincent Kompany as his Burnley team lost again to Crystal Palace 2-0.

Manchester City stomped to the top of the table with a 6-1 thumping at home to Bournemouth. Jeremy Doku was the star of the match as he scored a goal and provided 4 assists, making him the youngest player, at just 21, in English Premier League history to have five goal involvements in one match. Pep Guardiola’s men currently top the table with 27 points, with Spurs in second place with 26. Arsenal round up the top four with 24 points and will look to get back to winning ways when they host Burnley on Saturday.

The Grim Reality of Mine Collapses

In the dark and treacherous depths of the earth, where miners toil daily to extract precious resources that power our world, a haunting spectre looms ever-present: the threat of a mine collapse. It is a tragedy that continues to claim the lives of brave people, leaving a trail of heartbreak and sorrow in its wake. Mine collapses serve as an upsetting example of the risks involved in this necessary but dangerous business.

The media has frequently captured the nation’s interest with stories of miners trapped far underground by collapsing tunnels. These sad occurrences show us the grave consequences that might result from poor safety regulations or from pushing the limits of exploration and extraction by humans. The human lives at the centre of these stories must be kept in mind, as well as the urgent need for changes to stop similar tragedies from happening again.

The recent case of two miners who lost their livers after the walls of an underground gold mine caved in on them in Ikolomani, Kakamega County is a recent example of how unsafe these mines have become. It is seen that one of the deceased, Evans Museve, entered the mine to inspect a hole’s formation following the dewatering and lowering of the water table.

Not just the miners themselves but also their families, friends, and entire communities suffer when a mine collapses. Beyond explanation, the relatives of the missing miners are experiencing unimaginable sorrow and worry. The distress of not knowing if their loved ones are alive or not during the hours, days, and perhaps weeks of rescue efforts is ingrained into our collective consciousness.

Rose Ayuma, the mother of one of the deceased spoke of her frustration upon learning of her son’s fate. She emphasized the financial strain that this loss has brought to her family and pleaded for assistance to support her late son’s wife and two children. The family now faces a lot of problems after the incident since they have to take care of the deceased family, which is sad because he is just doing his job.

The miners themselves are not primarily to blame for these disasters. The responsibility for guaranteeing the security of persons who work in the mining industry must be shared by mining corporations, governments, and regulatory organisations. It is crucial to take adequate safety precautions, receive continual training, conduct frequent inspections, and strictly adhere to the rules. However, the desire for profit and other economic pressures can weaken these vital safety precautions, resulting in accidents that could have been prevented.

We can see that miners in Kenya are poorly equipped and they lack the necessary gear to help them do their work effectively. The government should deploy better mining equipment because many people tragically lose their lives in the blink of an eye, seeing that all this could be avoided.

However, this problem is not limited to a single nation or a specific kind of mine. It is an issue that affects miners all over the world, from South America to Asia and from Africa to Europe. We should be united in our resolve to defend individuals who put their lives in danger to seek out essential goods because of this issue.

Innovating and utilising technology can help to mitigate this serious problem. Robotics advancements, remote sensing advancements, and better communication systems can all contribute to increased safety precautions and rescue efforts. The industry should make using these tools a top priority.

Change can also be driven by public pressure on authorities, businesses, and the sector as a whole. The combined voice of the people could call for accountability and transparency in mining operations, pressuring businesses to put safety and moral conduct ahead of financial gains.

The heartbreaking accounts of miners who perished in mine disasters serve as sad reminders of how much our world depends on the labour and sacrifice of these brave people. Therefore, we must make the necessary modifications to save the lives of miners and their families from such tragic losses. Mine collapses should not be a repeating nightmare for the present and the future, but an intolerable tragedy of the past.

In conclusion, miner deaths due to collapses are more than just tragic accidents, they are also signs of broader issues with the mining industry. We must keep in mind that every life lost affect family, communities, and society as a whole negatively. The daily risk to their life that miners take while working is unacceptable. Therefore, let us uphold their sacrifices by advocating for a mining sector that puts workers’ safety and welfare above all else and is more responsible, accountable, and compassionate.
