Recently, Kenya has witnessed demonstrations across the nation. While protests are an important part of any democratic society, the frequency and intensity of these demonstrations raise concerns about their long-term effects on Kenya’s democracy and social cohesion.

The protests can serve as powerful tools for expressing grievances and demanding accountability from the government. They allow citizens to have their voices heard and can bring attention to critical issues that might otherwise be ignored. However, when protests become a routine, it signals underlying problems in the system that must be addressed.

One of the major challenges with the current state of maandamano in Kenya is the violence and civil unrest. Peaceful protests have escalated into brutality between protesters and the police which in turn has led to to injuries, loss of lives, and property damage as we have witnessed. Such incidents not only disrupt social order but also deepen divisions within society.

Another concern is that prolonged demonstrations can hinder economic growth and development. The instability caused by constant protests can discourage foreign investment. This is currently happening as investors are fleeing to the neighboring countries. Other than that there is disruption of business operations, and destruction of livelihoods of ordinary citizens.

Moreover, the nature of the protests can divide communities. When protests are driven by political affiliations rather than a collective pursuit of the common good, the divisiveness can weaken the fabric of the nation, hindering progress and the sense of national identity.

When demonstrations become a routine, there is a risk that their impact diminishes over time. People may start to view protests as merely disruptive events rather than genuine calls for change, leading to lack of interest and a loss of faith in the democratic process.

To address the challenges posed by the current maandamano state, both the government and civil society must take measures. The government should prioritize dialogue and engage with protestors to understand their grievances and find peaceful resolutions to their concerns. Protest organizers should also resort to peaceful and constructive means of expression.

In conclusion, while demonstrations are an essential aspect of any thriving democracy, their long-term effects on Kenya’s political stability, economy, and social cohesion cannot be ignored. To safeguard the nation’s future, it is crucial to strike a balance between the right to protest and the need for stability and progress.

In Loitoktok, my hometown, we would score very high on Hofstede’s dimension of uncertainty avoidance, where ‘different is dangerous’ holds true (to the best of my knowledge). Having partly grown up in the coastal region, I was seen as outright dangerous due to the stereotypes associated with it. The coast is often stereotyped as a place where demons roam in broad daylight, interacting with residents.

Being an introvert with an obsession for nature only made it more challenging for me not to stand out. I would take aimless walks to different places just to admire the sunlight or sunset from various angles, and my fascination with rivers could make me sit with my feet in the water for hours. While these attributes were frowned upon, no one dared to question me. Instead, they labeled me as a weirdo during my teenage years.

I was the girl parents warned their children against, simply because I loved wearing short shorts and skirts, which were considered unacceptable. Most were told to stay away from me, and I think the root of the problem was the strong uncertainty avoidance embedded in the culture. Being different automatically meant being dangerous.

Despite being the weirdo, I had no trouble finding solace in my own company or in the company of those with weaker uncertainty avoidance. With these few individuals, I formed strong bonds that have lasted for years.

High school was the most challenging phase. Within a year, I was labeled as a devil worshiper. This misconception arose from my passion for sunrise, sunset, and stargazing, as well as the fact that I kept a private diary, diligently writing in it every night before bedtime. People rumoured that I wrote the names of my intended victims in this diary. Little did they know that it contained my innermost thoughts and reflections.

To further complicate matters, I was a heavy sleeper, and one time, the Christian Union (CU) attempted to pray over me while I slept. However, I slept through the whole ordeal, leading to rumors that I was actually in the sea, and that they had prayed for a body without a soul.

Additionally, my academic excellence led to bizarre rumours that I could supernaturally read others’ minds and use that knowledge to pass exams. These misunderstandings, in my opinion, were products of a culture with a strong uncertainty avoidance tendency.

Nonetheless, I found profound joy in those who showed genuine interest in my uniqueness and asked questions that led to lasting friendships.

Sadio Mane’s time at Bayern Munich came to an unexpected end, with the Senegalese forward making a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. A turbulent season at Bayern saw him fined and suspended after an altercation with a teammate. Now, at Al-Nassr, Mane joins a star-studded lineup, including Cristiano Ronaldo, hoping to rediscover the form that made him a Liverpool legend.

After joining Bayern Munich last summer, Mane faced numerous challenges, including an injury just before the World Cup. His impact on the field was hampered, leading to a joint decision to seek a fresh start at a different club. Bayern’s CEO expressed gratitude for his contributions and wished him success at Al-Nassr.

Mane now finds himself at Al-Nassr, playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and other highprofile recruits like Marcelo Brozovic, Seko Fofana, and Alex Telles. The Saudi Pro League’s spending spree continues to attract European football stars to the Middle East.

At Al-Nassr, Mane aims to recapture the form that made him a prolific scorer during his sixyear tenure at Liverpool. He contributed 120 goals in 269 appearances for the Reds, helping secure multiple prestigious titles.

As Mane prepares to debut in the Saudi top flight, his journey brings him to a fresh start and new challenges. With renewed enthusiasm, he seeks to leave a lasting impact at Al-Nassr and showcase his talent once again.

The draw for the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers was made and Kenya finds itself in a tight Group “F”, having being pitted against Gambia, Gabon, Seychelles, Côté D’Ivoire and Burundi. With the team’s first matches set to be played between November 13 and November 21, Harambee Stars has enough time to prepare for these matches.

Kenya has not even qualified for the World Cup in recent memory. The furthest the national team has come to participating in the global or continental stage was the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) where they were in a group featuring Sénégal , Algeria and Tanzania. Kenya only won one game in that group stage, beating neighbors Tanzania 3-2.

With the increase of participating countries in the World Cup from 32 to 48, this has seen African countries get a rise from the usual 5 countries to 10. From the face value, the only tough challengers in the qualifiers group would be Burundi. Out of the 10 slots, only 1 is through the play- off round while the other 9 are direct qualification. The winners of the groups qualify directly.

This might seem like a long shot, but with proper training and support, Kenya might just pull the surprise of the year by beating Ivory Coast and emerging as real contenders for group winners. Obviously they have to get maximum points from the other games as well, as the other teams would also be fighting for a chance to put their nations on the global stage.

Over- reliance on specific international players like Victor Wanyama does not send a good picture. One factor that leads to long lasting success is the ability to produce new talent almost on a daily basis. European teams like Belgium and Croatia may have ageing players like Kevin De Bruyne or Luka Modric respectively, but they already have younger and more upcoming players like Jeremy Doku, Thorgan Hazard( Belgium), Josko Gvardiol, Andrej Kramaric( Croatia).

Harambee Stars does not necessarily have players of such high caliber, but at least the aspect of developing talent should be at the fore front if we are to give a proper fight for glory. Even in the African countries that have qualified before, almost all are usually from either West Africa ( Ghana, Ivory Coast, Sénégal, Cameroon) or North Africa ( Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia). Last year’s edition saw Morocco become surprise semi finalists, beating the likes of Portugal and Spain on the way to a top four finish.

Young players are being recruited from the Kenya Premier League teams, which is a good sign. More recruitment needs to be done at grassroot level, where there may be hidden gems ready to shine their light to the world. The government together with all other stakeholders must have ensure everything is set and not allow room for sideshows: politics, leadership strangles, corruption cases and whatnot. Such incidences lower players’ morale and we should take advantage of this expansion. As they like to say in Swahili, “wakati ni sasa na kama si sasa ni sasa hivi.”

We all love the feeling of crawling into a cozy bed after a long day. But have you ever stopped to think about what’s lurking in your bedding? Your sheets, pillows, and comforter might be harboring more than just comfort. When you don’t change your bedding regularly, you expose yourself to a host of potential health risks and diminishing sleep quality.

Let’s face it, life can get busy, and changing the bedding might not be at the top of your to-do list. However, neglecting this essential chore can lead to a range of problems you’d rather avoid.

    • Allergies and Respiratory Issues:

Over time, your bedding accumulates dead skin cells, dust mites, and pet dander, becoming a breeding ground for allergens. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, these microscopic irritants can trigger sneezing, coughing, and congestion, disrupting your peaceful slumber.

    • Skin Problems:

Dirty bedding can also contribute to skin issues. The buildup of sweat, oil, and bacteria on your sheets can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts. Additionally, not changing your pillowcase regularly can transfer these impurities to your face night after night.

    • Foul Odors:

Ever noticed a musty smell in your bedroom? That could be a result of unwashed bedding. Sweat, body oils, and spills can accumulate over time, causing an unpleasant odor that’s not only uninviting but also detrimental to your sleep environment.

    • Poor Sleep Quality:

Clean bedding provides a fresh and comfortable sleeping surface. On the other hand, unchanged sheets and pillows can feel uncomfortable and disrupt your sleep. A lack of restful sleep can lead to daytime fatigue, reduced focus, and overall diminished well-being.

The good news is that maintaining a clean sleep environment doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Here are some simple tips to keep your bedding fresh and hygienic:

    • Wash your sheets and pillowcases once a week, preferably, in hot water to kill dust mites and eliminate bacteria.
    • Use pillow case covers and mattress protectors to prevent stains and reduce allergen accumulation.
    • Air out your bedding regularly to remove any lingering odors and moisture.
    • Rotate and fluff your pillows to maintain their shape and support.

By incorporating these easy steps into your routine, you can enjoy a more restful sleep and avoid the potential consequences of neglected bedding. Remember, taking care of your bedding means taking care of yourself.

So, the next time you hit the hay, rest easy knowing you’re giving yourself the clean and comfortable sleep you deserve.

Mwai Kibaki’s grandson, Sean Andrew, defends Jomo Kenyatta amid unlicensed firearms allegations

Sean Andrew, the grandson of former President Mwai Kibaki, has come forward to defend John Jomo Kenyatta, the son of former head of state Uhuru Kenyatta. Sean asserted that he was unjustly singled out in relation to allegations surrounding the possession of unlicensed firearms.

“Jomo is someone i know personally and i think he was unfairly targeted. I’m not going to pick sides politically or anything but i think Jomo is innocent and so is Mama Ngina,” he stated.

During an interview, Sean Andrew emphasized that the focus should not have been on targeting Jomo, irrespective of any disagreements they may have had. He expressed that it would have been more appropriate to engage in a dialogue and refrain from involving him in the matters of the protest or any related issues.

“They should not have targeted anyone unrelated to what their disagreements are. I think these are grown men and they should talk it out. they should not involve us in protests or anything. We have real issues as human beings as people of Kenya we have real issues. I think it’s quite unfair that they’ve gathered young people to gang up and die and protest and fight the police and fight the power whatever.”

The well known personality further remarked that, being grown men, their responsibility was to engage in open discussions to address their political differences. He expressed his view that it was unjust to neglect the purpose of electing leaders, which is to serve the people. However, he made it clear that he personally did not identify as a politician and had no desire to entangle himself in such matters.

“I think it’s quite unfair because they’re grown men, they can discuss these issues. Why did we elect them? We elected them to serve us. That’s what Kenyan people have forgotten. But anyway i’m not a politician and i don’t want to get in that mess.” he stated.

When probed about his potential political aspirations, he firmly asserted that he would never entertain the idea of entering politics. He underscored the belief that political involvement was not a prerequisite for serving the public effectively. According to him, it was entirely possible to make a positive difference in people’s lives without engaging in politics. Thus, he stated that he could continue to contribute to society privately as an ordinary citizen.

“Never, never. I don’t think in Kenya you need to be a politician to serve people publicly. I think you can help a great number of people without being a politician, and that’s the way it should be. Politics is an ugly business and i’m not interested in that. I can serve people in my only way privately as a private citizen.” he said

On Friday, 21st July, a police raid was conducted at Jomo’s residence in Karen, Nairobi, in search of firearms. According to the former head of State, the officers involved in the operation utilized vehicles bearing Sudanese number plates and appeared to be intent on thoroughly searching the premises.

The scoreboard saw an avalanche of goals as Dalot, Antony, Donyell Malen, and Youssoufa Moukoko all found the back of the net in this pre-season thriller.

The contest got off to a fast start in the 24th minute, when Dalot struck the back of the net with a thunderous strike, giving his team an early lead. The excitement didn’t end there, as Donyell Malen stole the show shortly before halftime with two consecutive goals in the 43rd and 44th minutes, leaving the opponents startled and trailing by a goal.

After the break, Antony showed brought the Red devils back in the game in the 52nd minute, gliding past defenders and putting the ball into the net. However, the competition remained fierce, with both teams vying for control of the game.

  • From Falcons to Chipu: Meet the Daystarians Tearing it up at the International Stage

From Falcons to Chipu: Meet the Daystarians Tearing it up at the International Stage

Geylord Ngasi, Eddy Wambugu and Mike Oduor are living the dream at the world rugby under 20 trophy tournament with the world’s best. The Daystar Falcons players have had the privilege to transition from university rugby to tearing it up at the international stage.

The trio’s journey has been nothing but incredible. Geylord Ngasi’s rugby journey began when he joined the Daystar Falcons just a year ago. He faced several challenges as a newcomer with limited prior training. However, his determination and perseverance led him to become a promising player on the team.

After hearing about the Daystar rugby trials, Geylord decided to give it a shot, and luck was on his side as he earned a scholarship with the school. As a rookie, he had to prove himself during the preseason training sessions. His hard work and dedication didn’t go unnoticed, and he gained recognition from the coach.

Despite falling ill during the first match of the season, Geylord’s debut came in the second match, and he continued to impress on the field. Adapting to the competitive environment of Athi River proved to be a challenge, but he pushed himself out of his comfort zone to excel.

Geylord’s ambition didn’t stop at the school level. With aspirations of playing for Chipu (the Kenya Under-20 national rugby team), he trained relentlessly, drawing from the experience of the training sessions before joining the Daystar Falcons. His efforts paid off, as he secured a spot on the national team, an achievement he never imagined possible.

Reflecting on his journey, Geylord humbly acknowledges the invaluable lessons learned both on and off the field. Playing against skilled opponents has taught him to seek guidance and learn from others, leading to personal growth and improvement in his game.

This kind of experience is what anyone playing rugby would wish for. It’s so humbling yet also a lesson. As you are in the game I mean you meet someone playing that same position as you and you are like this guy knows what he is doing. You reach out at the end of the game and you learn a few things from the opposition and yet from my own teammates who I’ve socialized with them and I’ve come to learn alot. When I started my rugby journey I would never have imagined that I would get to experience such

Michael Oduor is another exciting export for Daystar Falcons. He has played for Daystar Falcons for two seasons now. In those two years, one of rugby’s biggest young prospect has made tremendous progress. Oduor delved in to just how big a part Daystar Falcons played in preparing him to represent his country on the international stage.

Falcons imenisaidia juu, you know the coach anajua, your strength anakushow hapo hivo what you are capable of and if you execute it hio ndio kitu wa anangalia huku kwa national team.

Oduor made the switch from university rugby to national rugby. Many might fold under the pressure, but the young lad relishes the gusto of competing with the big boys. He compares his university rugby experience and that of the international stage and says it is indeed very different.

He shares how the pressure to perform when the cameras are on you and the nation is behind you was a bit overwhelming at first. He however grew into it and he’s not looked back ever since. The young lad has had to hone his skills to be able to hold position number 2 for the Chipu. A position which he says is not short of it’s challenges.

Unajua mimi ni hooker, I play position number two and kama hooker, ball ikitoka, off the line I need to throw the ball back. Na kama kuna pressure mingi and I lose my concentration, hapo I end up ni methrow ball not straight and that’s a penalty against us.

Having made such a huge milestone and a big switch to national rugby, just what does the future hold for some of rugby’s biggest prospect? Well the young lads have set their sight on the Shujaa and hope to make the switch from U20 rugby.

It is incredible how greatness often emerges from such humble beginnings. Our rugby stars’ journey is just beginning. As they continue their rugby journey, Geylord Ngasi and Mike Oduor stands as a testament to the power of dedication and hard work.

An El Clasico is never a friendly. Barcelona defeated Real Madrid in the American Tour Tournament’s first Classico of the year. Top teams from the world’s most elite leagues have been competing in preparation for the new season, which begins in a few weeks.

Albeit, when two of the biggest teams in Spain and the world meet – even if it is overseas – it is not a preseason friendly. Blaugrana were victorious in a tense 90-minute battle.

The match was played at a high tempo, with both teams’ starting eleven featuring a new and young middle field. Barcelona’s youth team won the battle against €400 million midfield combo with Belingham at the helm of the triangle. Pedri assisted Dembele’s goal in the 15th minute, but the two late goals by Lopez Martin and Ferran Torres sealed the Catalonians wins. This maintains their three-game winning streak on American soil against Real Madrid.

Despite the big core, there was nothing else Real Madrid could have done in front of goal except score. Their powerful samba combination up top was continually running at and past the Barcelona defense. But they were unable to score finish their chances. With amazing efforts from Vini, Tchouameni, and other players, they ended up hitting the crossbar. Overall, Barcelona survived thanks to a revitalised De Jong in midfield and Terstegen in goal, giving us something to look forward to in next season’s Clasicos.
