Reflections from DUBrains AI Conference 2026 and the launch of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Innovation and Society (JAIDIS)
Artificial Intelligence has become the defining conversation of our generation. Across universities, governments, businesses, development organizations, and communities, the question is no longer whether AI will shape our future. It already is.
The more important question is this:
What kind of future are we building?
That question sat at the heart of the recently concluded DUBrains AI Conference 2026 at Daystar University. Over five days, scholars, practitioners, policymakers, innovators, faith leaders, communicators, librarians, lawyers, and students gathered to explore the opportunities and responsibilities that accompany the rapid rise of artificial intelligence.
What emerged was far more than a conversation about technology.
It was a conversation about leadership.
It was a conversation about ethics.

One of the conference’s most compelling presentations came from Prof. Muturi Wachira, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Finance, Administration and Planning, who challenged participants to rethink what institutional sustainability means in the age of AI.
A sustainable institution is not merely one that survives financially. It is one that sustains its mission, demonstrates long-term financial resilience, creates enduring value, continuously innovates, and remains accountable to society.
Such institutions balance:
- Financial viability
- Ethical governance
- Environmental stewardship
- Social responsibility
- Long-term value creation
AI increasingly sits at the centre of this equation.
Organizations across the globe are investing heavily in AI as a strategic capability to improve productivity, strengthen resilience, and unlock new forms of value creation. Between 2023 and 2024 alone, generative AI adoption rose dramatically, with organizations reporting significant gains in operational efficiency and business performance.
Research suggests that every dollar invested in AI can generate up to three dollars in return. Sectors such as financial services, retail, media, mobility, and manufacturing are already realizing measurable benefits.
These benefits include:
- Revenue growth through personalization and hyper-local solutions
- Reduced operating costs through automation
- Better capital allocation
- Reduced losses
- Enhanced enterprise risk management
Case studies from organizations such as JPMorgan Chase and Microsoft demonstrate AI’s transformative potential when strategically implemented.
Yet despite rising investment, many organizations continue to struggle with returns.
Why?
Because AI initiatives are often deployed as technology projects rather than institutional strategies.
Weak governance structures, lack of accountability, talent shortages, inadequate digital infrastructure, resistance to change, and poorly defined performance indicators continue to undermine impact.
The lesson is clear:
Technology without strategy creates activity. Technology aligned with mission creates transformation.
The Sustainability Challenge Is Ultimately a Leadership Challenge
The conference repeatedly reinforced a critical truth: AI adoption is not fundamentally a technology challenge.
It is a leadership challenge.
Institutions that will thrive over the next decade will not necessarily be those with the largest technology budgets.
They will be those capable of integrating innovation, governance, accountability, ethics, and human-centered purpose into a coherent vision.
The future belongs to institutions that can leverage technology while maintaining public trust.
And trust begins with leadership.
Why Africa Needs Its Own Voice in AI
The most significant announcement of the conference came during the closing address by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Laban P. Ayiro.
Daystar University officially launched the Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Innovation and Society (JAIDIS) — a bold initiative designed to position Africa at the forefront of responsible AI scholarship.
The ambition is significant.
By 2032, JAIDIS seeks to become Africa’s premier AI journal, characterized by:
- Scopus indexing
- Web of Science indexing
- International authorship from more than 50 countries
- A globally respected editorial board
- High citation impact
- Recognition as a leading authority on responsible AI
But what makes JAIDIS remarkable is not simply its academic ambition.
It is its philosophy.
While many AI journals focus exclusively on technological advancement, JAIDIS is intentionally built around a broader proposition:
Artificial Intelligence + Digital Innovation + Ethics + Virtuous Leadership + Human Flourishing
That final phrase—human flourishing—may become Daystar University’s most important contribution to global AI conversations.
Human Flourishing as a Competitive Advantage
Every institution must answer a fundamental question:
What is our distinctive contribution?
For Daystar University, the answer appears increasingly clear.
Human flourishing.
While many institutions focus on building more powerful technologies, Daystar is positioning itself to explore how technology can serve dignity, wellbeing, inclusion, sustainability, and societal transformation.
As Prof. Ayiro observed, most journals focus on AI.
JAIDIS will focus on AI for human flourishing.
Its core pillars include:

This niche has the potential to become Daystar’s global identity.
The Missing Variable in AI Conversations: Character
Among the conference’s most intriguing research findings was an emerging model connecting leadership character, virtue, responsible AI, and human flourishing.
The findings revealed that leadership character significantly influences Virtue Quotient (VQ), which in turn shapes responsible AI outcomes that ultimately contribute to human flourishing.
The framework identified several interconnected dimensions:

Or put differently:
Technology will never rise beyond the character of its creators.
Eight Reflections That Captured the Spirit of DUBrains 2026
In his synthesis of the conference deliberations, Conference Committee Chair Prof. Egara Kabaji offered reflections that may ultimately define the legacy of DUBrains 2026.
First, Daystar has a unique opportunity to lead Africa’s AI conversation. Its greatest contribution may not be developing the most powerful technologies, but developing the most transformative ideas. The university can become an intellectual home for responsible and virtuous AI.
Second, institutions must move beyond compliance-based systems toward character-based leadership. Virtue—not merely regulation—must become the foundation of AI development.
Third, responsible people must guide responsible technology. AI itself is neither moral nor immoral. It simply amplifies the values of those who design, deploy, and govern it.
Fourth, no level of technological sophistication can ever justify diminishing human dignity.
Fifth, Africa must move from being merely consumers of AI to becoming creators of AI. The continent needs indigenous solutions designed around African realities, opportunities, and aspirations.
This requires transforming institutions of higher learning into laboratories of innovation and ethical reflection—places that educate minds while simultaneously shaping conscience.
Sixth, inclusion remains the true measure of innovation.
One of the most remarkable achievements of DUBrains 2026 was the diversity of disciplines represented. Computer scientists, librarians, lawyers, policymakers, business leaders, theologians, storytellers, communication experts, and researchers all participated in shaping the conversation.
The future of AI will not be written by technologists alone.
It will emerge at the intersection of different forms of knowledge.
As Prof. Kabaji noted:
Innovation that leaves any group behind is not actual progress.
Seventh, public trust is becoming the foundational currency of the future. Institutions that fail to earn and maintain trust will struggle regardless of technological capability.
And finally, DUBrains 2026 does not mark the end of a conversation.
It marks the beginning of a movement.
The revolutionary work has only just begun.
A Movement, Not a Moment
In his closing remarks, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Research and Student Affairs, Prof. Samuel Muriithi, described DUBrains 2026 as one of the most successful conferences Daystar University has hosted.
Reflecting on the week-long gathering that began on July 13 and concluded on July 17, he emphasized that AI represents more than technological advancement.
It is a paradigm shift.
A shift in thinking.
A river already in motion.
The challenge now is not whether institutions will engage with AI.
The challenge is whether they will do so thoughtfully, ethically, and courageously.
Prof. Muriithi left participants with a guiding principle drawn from Colossians 3:23:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.”
That charge feels particularly relevant for the road ahead.
The Work Before Us
The launch of JAIDIS represents more than the creation of another academic journal.
It represents an aspiration.
To shape public policy.
To influence ethical AI practice.
To inspire global scholarship.
To advance African innovation.
To humanize technology.
The greatest journals do not merely archive research.
They define the future of scholarship.
Likewise, the greatest institutions do not merely respond to change.
They shape it.
And the greatest innovations do not simply make life more efficient.
They make life more meaningful.
As Africa continues its AI journey, perhaps our greatest opportunity is not to ask how intelligent our machines can become.
It is to ask how technology can help people, communities, and societies flourish.
Because ultimately, the future of AI will not be judged by its computational power.
It will be judged by its contribution to human dignity.
And that is a future worth building.
