The Mashemeji derby, pitting AFC Leopards against Gor Mahia will be played this Saturday at the Kasarani stadium with bragging rights at stake as the FKF Premier League enters round six.

In their most recent encounter, AFC Leopards ended a seven-year winless streak against Gor Mahia, securing a memorable win with Maxwell Otieno’s towering header from Eugene Mukangula’s corner. Victor Omune and Austin Odhiambo also contributed to the scoreline, resulting in a gripping contest that took place on May 14, 2023.

This upcoming match marks the 97th face-off between these two teams, with Gor Mahia holding a superior head-to-head record, having claimed victory 33 times, while AFC Leopards triumphed 29 times, and 35 matches ended in draws.

AFC Leopards enters the derby in a challenging position, having struggled in the early stages of the season, with no wins in their first five games.

The Tom Juma’s charges have lost once and head into the derby on the back of a 1-1 draw against Shabana FC which was the fourth of the season.

Goals have been hard to come by for Leopards, scoring only three while conceding four. The pressure is mounting on manager Tom Juma, who is at risk of facing the same fate as some other sacked coaches, with AFC Leopards sitting 15th in the league, just a point away from the relegation play-off spot.

On the other hand, reigning champions Gor Mahia have experienced mixed results but remain unbeaten after five rounds of play. Currently, they sit in second place on the league table with nine points, trailing league leaders Posta Rangers by four points. Gor Mahia has won twice, drawn thrice, and scored eight goals while conceding four.

Adding to the excitement, this Mashemeji derby will make history as the first match to be broadcast by Azam TV, the official broadcast partners of the league. The federation signed a 7-year deal with the Tanzanian broadcaster worth 145 million weeks ago and it will be the second time they will be airing the derby.

Kick-off for the derby is scheduled for 4 pm.

Daystar Falcons Narrowly edge Daystar City in Derby

The two campuses of Daystar University faced off on October 1st, at Thika Grounds in a highly anticipated derby encounter.

Daystar Falcons; Athi River’s team, got the best of Daystar City; Nairobi’s team after a great contest but questionable refereeing.

Kimongi was the player on fire. He let loose a rocket from a rebounded shot late into the first half. He later on came close but was denied a brace. Kelly later got one back for the Nairobi team but it might have been a little too late.

Both fans were visibly uncomfortable with several decisions made by the referee. The crowd voiced their frustrations but they fell on deaf ears. Despited the heated game there was sign of indiscipline and no red cards were awarded.

Some key players that usually make a difference had to sit this one out as Daystar City new head coach made bold changes.

The game ended 2-1, a triumphant win for Athi Rivers team and a deflating loss for Daystar City FC.

Other than the scorching 1 pm sun and the lack of shade and adequate benches for the fans, it was an interesting derby encounter that delighted the fans.

The announcement was made on September 27 by the President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe. Motsepe emphasized the importance of these three nations meeting specific requirements, including freedom of movement and infrastructure support as ealuation teams will assess their progress.

In response to Kenya’s successful bid, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Ababu Namwamba, assigned the Nyayo National Stadium, Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium to the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) for renovation, with the aim of hosting the 2027 AFCON.

The challenge now is to complete these four projects by 2025, as Kenya previously missed out on hosting opportunities due to stadium standards not meeting FIFA criteria in 1996 and 2018.

Signed from Borussis Dortmund for an all- time record fee for a British player and the second-most expensive transfer in Real Madrid history, many wondered how Bellingham would fit into the Spanish giants. 5 matches into the season however, he has proved everyone wrong. The youngster has scored 5 goals and provided 1 assist for Madrid this season, taking them to the top of the table, unbeaten with 15 points.

So good have been his performances that he became the first English player in Laliga to ever win the Player of the Month award. His 5 goals and 1 assists won him the La Liga Santander August Player of the Month award. He showcased it before the Madrid fans before their match againt Real Sociedad yesterday, where they emerged 2-1 winners. Ahead of their Champions League opener against Union Berlin later in the week, all eyes continue to be on Jude and his exciting performances are sure to leave many optimistic and hopeful of what the future holds for him.

With Karim Benzema’s departure to Saudi Arabia, many wondered who would replace the Frenchman’s position as their main goal scoring threat. After Kylian Mbappe extended his contract with PSG, potentially ending a possible move to Madrid, Real had to settle for former Real Sociedad striker Joselu. Despite losing Benzema, Madrid have somehow managed to find their rhythm, with their attacking players Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Joselu playing as the front three. Bellingham has formed a good partnership with other midfielders like Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Federico Valverde. It may be too early to say, but with this continued dynamism in the team, Bellingham and his teammates could win all the gold this season.

Vihiga United received a significant boost on Tuesday, the 12th, as the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) lifted their transfer ban. This ban had been imposed at the start of the 2021/2022 season due to the club’s failure to settle the outstanding wages of former player Junior Adeyafa, amounting to Ksh 200,000.

Junior Adeyafa, a Nigerian international, had a stint with Vihiga United during the 2019/2020 season, during which his wages remained unpaid. However, an out-of-court settlement has now been reached between Vihiga United and the player, in accordance with FIFA’s communication via a letter addressed to Vihiga United, effectively ending the transfer ban.

Vihiga United has faced significant challenges, including having to field just nine players in a match against Kajiado FC at one point. The club confirmed this positive development via their Facebook page, expressing their intent to enter the transfer market to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming national super league season.
