Premier League Approaches €1 Billion Spending Spree

    By Eugene Oyier

    (eugeneoyier@gmail.com)

The Premier League is quickly approaching the remarkable milestone of spending €1 billion on incoming transfers this summer. The English league has already splurged an incredible €870 million during the summer transfer window, which has been open for less than two weeks.

It is highly likely that by the end of the week, the Premier League will successfully reach the €1 billion mark with upcoming transfers of West Ham midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal for €123 million, and Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana making a move to Manchester United for €60 million.

Impressively, these figures have been achieved with the European transfer window still in its early stages. Despite the emerging competition from the Saudi Pro League, the Premier League shows no signs of slowing down and is poised to break spending records once again.

Among the notable spenders, Arsenal is set to surpass the €200 million mark by acquiring Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, and Jurrien Timber. Meanwhile, Tottenham currently holds the title for the highest spenders in England, having secured the signings of five players for a total of €136 million.

Liverpool, on the other hand, has made substantial investments, exceeding €100 million on two players, namely Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szobozlai. Additionally, Manchester United’s expenditure will reach €125 million when Onana joins their ranks alongside newcomer Mason Mount.

Although Chelsea has only just begun their spending spree, they are already nearing the €100 million mark. Notably, Newcastle broke the transfer fee record for a Milanese and Italian player by acquiring Sandro Tonali for €70 million.

Brighton, Brenford, and Wolves have also shown their financial muscle, each surpassing €50 million in spending so far.

In terms of net spend, the Premier League currently stands at -€382 million, outshining Serie A (€71 million), La Liga (€-20 million), and the Bundesliga (€187 million in the green).

These staggering figures once again highlight the vast economic gap between the Premier League and other European leagues. Consequently, it is no surprise that fans outside of England express their dissatisfaction with the lack of competitive balance and equality in club football today.

As the years pass, this trend continues to grow, widening the gap between the Premier League and the rest of Europe. The league’s superior economic might raises concerns about the future of football, emphasizing the

    Fleeced

    By Angela Mutai

The desideratum to have a holiday escapade on a weekend free from the hustle and bustle of school among my friends birthed the idea to visit Fourteen Falls in Thika Kenya. My friend group consisted of myself, Victory, Cox and Mercy. The four of us had been inseparable since the first day of campus where we met during orientation.

The trip was scheduled for the 28th of August 2022 and relevant plans had been put into place for the trip. We were all aware of the approximate budget we would need to fuel Victory’s car, snacks, lunch, entry fees for the site and any other expenses that may have risen. Victory picked all of us from our respective residences and by 10am we were all jolly in his car catching up and listening to some music on the car’s stereo.

We used Google maps to navigate the area once we were in Thika and it took us about forty minutes from the town to get there. We were checked at the gate and we paid for parking and entry fees for all of us. We got in, parked and got ready the tour. At first all that was in sight was the river which is River Athi, the second longest river in Kenya. It wasn’t much to the eye then since the country had been experiencing inadequate rains which meant rivers were low capacity in terms of the amount of water they carried. The water level was so low you could see several rocks jn it’s mass.

From the river bank, we began walking south because we could hear the sounds of falling water which we could bet were the falls. Just before we could get any further than 7 metres we were approached by two gentlemen. They introduced themselves as Hawi and Odero and informed us that they were guides at the scenery. They were quick to discourage us from going on further south and insisted that they could give us a better view of the falls from the other side of the river. The only catch is that we would have to cross the river on foot with their assistance and guidance. Immediately, my guts detested the idea because if my phobia for large masses of water. However, my friends were for it, especially Victory who loved the thrill that came with rushing adrenaline. They immediately agreed to the idea and began taking their shoes off and folding their pants ready for the water. I was left at the bank of the river still trying to make inquiries on how much it would cost us but my queries fell to deaf ears ad they yanked me in with them.

Crossing the river was a difficult task. There were rocks that slid and hollow parts in the river and sometimes it felt like I was going to drown. When we reached the centre, we stopped for photos and to take the scenery in. The guides also informed us that diving was also an option for whoever was interested and Victory wanted to go for it. At this point I was still pushing the guides for a rough idea of how much the adventure would cost as to which they responded “hatuwezi kosana bei madam” which meant we would come to an agreement on the price. I was very uneasy because I knew one could not trust such a figurative statement. Finally we were on the other side and Odero took a few more photos of us. Victory had dived into the river with Hawi.

Odero then proceeded to tell us that it would only cost us Kshs. 5000 each and an extra 1500 each for a boat ride back. This would also include an extra 1500 for Victory for diving assistance. I was completely taken aback because the amount was preposterous. It was clear that we had been overcharged and we had no option but to pay up because there was no other way to get back to the bank. Victory and Hawi joined us and the two guides informed us that we would have to pay up or they would desert us there. There was no viable option, crossing the river back would be deadly because we had no knowledge on navigating the waters by ourselves. The only thing we could do was beg for a discount and accept that we had been fleeced.

After it was all said and done and we had ranted our hearts out, we knew we had to pay up so we enjoyed the view of the falls which was breath-taking though it was difficult to get lost in the moment considering how hurt we were to part with such an unexpected expense. The boat ride back was shorter than we had anticipated and we were back on land in a jiffy. We then paid the boat driver and proceeded to pay our guides though unwillingly. It was at that moment that we realized that the falls were equally as visible from the side and path we had originally been on before they diverged and conned us into crossing the river with the claim that the falls were only visible from the other side of the bank. The frustrations we felt could not be fathomable by mere words. We had a quick lunch by the riverside after which we drove back home in low spirits. We had been fleeced.

  • Empowering Young Hearts: Prioritizing Mental Health During Breakups

Empowering Young Hearts: Prioritizing Mental Health During Breakups

    Shirlene Omondi

The phrases “let it go” and “get over it” are the most hurtful words a human being would want to hear especially if it involves people or things we love or wish we had but never did.

It’s time we address the elephant in the room. How do breakups affect our mental health and how do we or should we handle it? We are in the 21st century, the world is evolving and with the new generation, you would not believe how young some people get into the dating world. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, kids start dating at an average age of 12 and a half for girls and 13 and a half for boys. That might seem crazy but in this era, nothing is new under the sun.

Breakups come in so many forms, it can be mutual, one-sided, and some even just ghost their partners and walk out of their lives without saying a thing. As much as some people might seem to be taking breakups lightly or rather fail to react to them, they are hurting inside. This might be because they are used to getting hurt that they no longer care whether their partners leave or not, some might get into depression and even lose hope in love or getting into romantic relationships, while others don`t actually mind, bearing the notion “there are plenty of fish in the sea.”

We are all aware that letting go or getting over someone you invested your feelings on is not as easy as people make it sound. Even though letting go might take a while, the healing process really matters. Study shows that breakups affect a lot of young people especially university students and might lead to health issues like anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, self-harm and even suicide as observed in the several reported cases in Kenya in the previous months.

Adjusting to changes after a break-up can be tough as one is transitioning from a companionship to a state of single hood . It’s time we agree that romance and consummate are both special kind of love. So, how do we go about it when we feel like our mental health is at stake during or after a break-up? Here are some few tips from onelove website.

    1. Allow yourself to fully feel everything you`re feeling
Before you decide to move on with your life, learn to accept that it has happened and there`s nothing that can be done. Cry, rant and allow yourself to experience this.

    2. Establish physical and emotional boundaries with your ex
Avoid every place or anything that might lead you to meet your ex.Don`t try this cliché of wanting to go back and taking your stuff that you forgot while leaving. It might be dangerous especially if the relationship was toxic.

    3. Gather your support system
Have a list of people you trust and are close to you. It might be your friends or family. Open up to them and don’t be scared to be vulnerable around them. This will give you comfort as you will not feel as lonely.

    4. Re-establish your self-confidence and independence
This is the time to do what you never had time to do while in the relationship. Learn new skills, put more effort in what you love doing.

    6. Seek professional help for additional support
A lot of people don’t like talking about their feelings with strangers hence avoid seeking professional help. This would be so important if nothing is working out and you are at the verge of losing hope in life and your mental health is deteriorating by day with no change.

As a young person, you should keep in mind that break-ups are a part of life and as long as you start involving yourself in romantic relationships, you are bound to experience this at least until you meet the love of your life. Sorry to break it to you but your mental health is much more important than that lady or man who treats you less than you deserve. Also, sometimes love fades and it’s healthy to part ways.

  • Greenwashing Awareness

    Greenwashing Awareness

    By Sharon Victoria

We recently celebrated world environmental day on June 5th and it was another opportunity to celebrate and appreciate the environment around us and come up with solutions to the current environmental problems. In light of that, we shall be talking about green washing, a big environmental hazard which has been a main concern of late.

In today’s world, environmentalism and environmental consciousness has been a hot topic of discussion that consumers are more drawn to sustainable products and companies. Due to this, companies have resulted to deceiving their consumers by green washing so as to still thrive in the market.

Greenwashing is the practice of misleading people into believing that a company and its products are sustainable and environmentally friendly when, in reality, they are not. This is usually done by placing misleading labels that claim the products are environmentally friendly, fake claims of supporting green initiatives.

Greenwashing has negative consequences for both the consumers and the environment. To begin with, it destroys consumer trust by manipulating them to take the sustainable route and in turn, the genuine sustainable markets face unfair competition and may also lose consumers on claims of greenwashing. The presence of these practices hinders the progress that many are trying to make so as to have a sustainable future thus derailing the plan of a better future.

The culprits of this vice are usually either in the food industry or the fashion industry. For the food industry you can get labels showing “organic” but you will miss the ingredients used or at times they omit the toxic chemicals used. In the fashion industry, fast fashion brands may promote clothing lines made from sustainable materials, but in turn it involves excessive emission of waste and exploitation of their workers.

To do away with greenwashing, companies need to practice transparency and accountability. Government regulations should also be strengthened and they should ensure that green claims are verified and standardized.

    GOODBYE

    By Shirlene Omondi

Flowers will bloom inside my lungs and keep me from the cold,

The earth will embrace me and keep me warm,

The world is too chaotic and it’s no one`s fault,

Nothing can change for it was my time to go.

    Why? You ask,

    I wish I could give a reason,

But my soul got weary every passing season,

Holding on felt like a task,

But my answers are with the one above.

I know you`ll miss my smile,

I`m sorry I never said goodbye,

I tried, and tried and tried,

But eventually ran out of time.

    Do not cry,

    Keep me in your mind,

as I’ll keep you in mine,

    Carry my love with you,

    And in your heart,

    Hold me in truth.

Look up whenever you think of me,

Close your eyes and count to three,

    Can you feel the breeze?

    That’s me.

    I`m at peace.

  • HIGH COURT SUSPENDS THE FINANCE ACT 2023.

HIGH COURT SUSPENDS THE FINANCE ACT 2023.

    By Hilda Kavai.

Kenya’s taxation plans have hit a snag as the High Court of Kenya indefinitely extended a prior suspension on the Finance Act 2023 that was due to go into effect on July 1.

This decision occurred as a result of a case filed by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, who challenged the constitutionality of numerous portions of the bill, claiming that they violate the Constitution in taxation concerns.

During the court hearing, Senator Omtatah expressed concern about 30 sections of the bill that allegedly violate constitutional provisions on taxation, urging the court to halt implementation of the Finance Act until the pending case is heard and determined, claiming that “it will subject Kenyans to slavery and servitude.”

In May this year, the Kenyan government proposed a number of amendments to the Finance Act 2023 that was not well received by most Kenyans. Among the amendments was a proposal to tax content creators, influencers, and crypto currency dealers.

President William Ruto assented to the Finance Bill and Appropriations Bill on Monday, June 26, 2023 at State House, Nairobi after a few modifications.

He also approved the Supplementary Appropriations (No. 2) Bill, 2023 warranting the additional spending by the National Government of Sh22.9 Billion from the Consolidated Fund.

This results in the reduction of overall expenditure by Sh25.5 Billion compared to the revised total National Government expenditure approved in the Supplementary Appropriations (No. 1), Act 2023.

The reduction comprises an increase in recurrent amounting to Sh9.5 Billion and rationalization of development spending by Sh 35 Billion.

The scaling down in spending is in line with the Government’s fiscal consolidation efforts in the light of debt servicing payments.

The Appropriations Bill authorizes the withdrawal of money from the Consolidated Fund for the expenditure of the National Government.

This is the first Appropriations Bill under the Kenya Kwanza Government and, therefore, seeks to align its Manifesto and promises through assignment of actual resources to meet various services and projects.

Speaking on behalf of the state, former Attorney General Githu Muigai cautioned that suspending the Act would jeopardize government operations. However, Justice Mugure Thande went ahead and extended the suspension.

In her ruling, the judge stated that, comparing the inconveniences that President William Ruto’s administration would face against the pain that Kenyans would have to bear if the law was determined to be unconstitutional, the latter was the lesser of two evils.

As she concluded her ruling, Justice Mugure directed that she would hand over the file to Lady Justice Martha Koome who would go on to appoint a three-judge bench so that they can hear the case.

It has been 13 days since the Act was suspended.
